The future of
Inheritance? Death. Slow, painful, inevitable death. People are starting to realize that it's not all it was hyped to be (and it's hard to keep up the facade that the author is still 15 years old after all these years

) and the extent to which it "borrows" from other fantasy worlds (the plot of
Star Wars, much of Middle-earth, dragons from
The Dragon Riders of Pern, a magic system stolen from the
Belgariad, etc.). The flop that was the movie didn't help either.
That's not to say that this will occur quickly though, and there is still a substantial enough fanbase out there. I will be
highly shocked if Inheritance is remembered 10 years from now though. Not that I'll remember it well enough to be shocked.
