  1. One of mine is in Twin Towers after Gollum is taken captive from the Forbidden Pool by Faramir with the aid of Frodo. Afterwards this scene occurs:

    "Smeagol...why does you cry Smeagol?"
"Cruel men hurts us. Master Trixed us."
"Of course he did. I told you he was tricksy. I told you he was false."
"Master is our friend, our friend."
    "Master betrayed us."
    "No."
"Not his business, leaves us alone."
"Filthy little hobbits, they stole it from us."
    "No, no!!"

    Faramir: "What did they steal...?"

    "My precious, ahhhhhhhhh!"

LOL...I love every single scene but this one always gets me and the kids giggling. I think it is just the simplicity of his feelings, the insanity of the OCD he has with the ring. It's hilarious!

My absolute favourite in the battle for Minas Tirith when Gandalf and Pippin are sat together, its a quiet moment as they are waiting for the orcs to break through the defences, and while the soldiers of the citadel are valiantly struggling at the gate pippin asks Gandalf what happens after death.

Pippin. I didnt think it would end this way.

Gandalf. End, no the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass and then you see it.

    Pippin. what Gandalf? see what?

Gandalf. White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.

Pippin. Well that isn't so bad.

    Gandalf. No, no it isn't.

I love that moment, the deep breath before the storm, Gandalfs blue eyes and pippin closing his eyes waiting for the end.

  3. Ayup...

Theodens speech to the Rohirrim immediately before charging the Orcs at Pelennor Fields. Reading it ALWAYS makes me hold my breath Involuntarily, and causes my Heart to race. Unfortunately, It's SO,SO understated in ROTK, and you only know Bernard Hill's said it, when they all shout 'Death', which is pretty all you CAN hear of it. When I first read the speech, I desperately, Desperately, wanted to be in that Charge...

  4. I would have to say my favorite scene was the opening scene where Frodo ran up to Gandalfs Cart and jumped over on to it. watching the bonus footage just made me realize how much work went into scenes like that how much editing had to be done to make a scene like that flow and work...I mean the whole movie other than a few things I didnt care for (Arwen's extended role for one)the movies were brilliant

  5. Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide.
    ...
All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
    ...
There are other forces at work in this world Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.

I love the scene in the book when Legolas is introducing the fellowship to Lothlorien and is taken of guard and falls down from the tree. I missed that in the movie :) always when I read it it makes me smile.

  8. In the movie?

./~ Home is behind / the world ahead / and there are many paths to tread....

That, and the lighting of the beacons. Both scenes give me goosebumps.

I love seeing when Aragorn is crowned and he sings Elendil's oath, the white tree of Gondor flowers and showers everyone in white petals.
'Et Eàrello Endorenna utùlien, sinome maruvan, ar Hildinyar tenn' Ambar-metta'.

  10. I'm sorry I have two real favorites, the Charge of the Rohirrim, "Death!" gets me everytime, and one of the few truly unchanged scenes: the destruction of Isengard by the Ents. Lots of scenes in the movie were altered or made up (like Elves at the Hornburg), but when the Ents attack, it looks exactly as I picture it in my mind.

In FOTR, just after Boromir tries to take the Ring, Aragorn finds Frodo, talks for a minute, then notices Sting glowing and says, "Run!" Then comes the cool part: he walks all slow-motion-y out from under that construct to face a small army of Uruk-hai - by himself. Then, after Aragorn kills the Uruk who shot Boromir, and he's running over to the dying Boromir, there's dozens of dead Uruks all over the ground in a rather small space - all of them (but one, I suppose) killed by Boromir, and some when he had arrows sticking out of chest.

In the Fellowship of the Ring, at the counsel of Elrond in Rivendale, when Frodo volunteers to take the ring to Mordor and the Fellowship is formed.

This isn't actually a scene, but the soundtrack to the movies was fan-freakin'-tastic! Not only did it have great songs, but the use of the music and other types of sounds was brilliant. Like right after Gandalf falls in Moria, the sound cuts out except for Frodo screaming, "NOOO!!" and the song when the get out - it really enhances the feeling of mourning and loss (and despair even).

I love our first real look at Minas Tirith when Gandalf and Pippin ride through the streets on Shadowfax to the citadel, and there in the white marble courtyard stands the white tree, and the hall of the steward. I love the strange light and the guards with black gullwing helmets, I love the music and I want to be there.

If you look at Google Images under the heading, Castello Arco or Castle Arco(in english) you will see a castle in Trento in Italy that could be an inspiration for a mini Minas Tirith. I went there this summer and it blew my mind its so beautiful.

  21. That is pretty Julia. Firms up my resolve to visit Italy some day...

another pretty castle is Castello Avio, also quite like a small Minas Tirith. Its a shame we won't be seeing Minas Tirith in the Hobbit.

  23. Another place which could have been an inspiration for Minas Tirith is Rocamadour in France, it's different levels and situation (built into the side of a valley) really gave me the feeling that i was entering JRR Tolkiens imagination. Also the medieval arches reminded me of that scene with Gandalf and Pippin riding through the citadel. If you've been there i'm sure you'll agree, and if you haven't you should because it's amazing!

  25. On the topic of Minas Tirith, I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but the number one inspiration for the Minas Tirith look in LOTR was Mont Saint-Michel in France (this has been confirmed).

Just google image Mont Saint-Michel -- it looks very similar.

I was there this past summer and it was amazing: felt like I was in Minas Tirith itself. Another fascinating aspect of Mont Saint-Michel is that the entire area is flat except for that fortress mountain. I could see it from my hostel a long ways off. Like Castello Arco and Rocamadour, Mont Saint-Michel is most definitely a must-see...

My fav scene was in the Mines of Moria before the appearance of the Balrog in which goblins were streaming out like cockaroaches.

its good to know that we can visit real places that look like Middle Earth. The flora of Ithilien seems very Mediterranean for example. check out the Duomo Amalfi, it could be Denethor's hall in the citadel.

  28. LOL @John. =0). I have so many favorite scenes... When I see Gandalf coming in his wagon up the road, just before Frodo jumps onto it? Fantastic ~* Every single thing, the grass, the aged wagon, Gandalf's robe, even his hat is woven with such light and love. Sooooooo charming.

When the skeleton falls into the well (and Gandalf chides the stupid little hobbit) inside the Mines of Moria, and you can hear it reverberate as it hits the walls clunk, clunk clunk... and then your stomach clutches with dread at the sound of the drumbeat because now the goblins KNOW they are there!

When the hobbits a bit later in that same scene fight with the mountain troll with the club and it gets confused, and grunts just before it falls down (my family always gets sad about that one)...

When Treebeard (Fangorn the Ent) awakens from Pippins shout and blinks. =o).

I also love the scene when the Eagles are swooping down to carry Frodo and Sam away from the boiling volcano. the music is angelic and dreamy, and then we see frodos face half not knowing if he is dead or in a dream with the beating wings of the Eagle flying under him, and then he wakes up and finds gandalf looking over him, and then they both laugh with joy, that really makes me cry like an idiot every time.

  30. there are many scenes i enjoy but my favorite is when Gimly and Legolas have a drink off :D Gimly's famous last words, "He who can't hold his liquer..." (Then he passes out) lol. Histarical. Oh and when Mary and Pippin steal Gandalf's Dragon Firework and light it off in the tent then they get stuck doing dishes under Gandalf's watchfull eye. also funny. :P
