What are you most looking forward to seeing in the Hobbit?

There seem to be a lot of discussions about what may or may not be happening with certain characters and specific scenes... a lot of which have had various negative comments by other users with their own personal opinion.

So... in a similar vain to the LOTR fave scene question... what are you most looking forward to seeing brought to life on film in the Hobbit movies? I would like this to be a positive thread.. not to dwell on how we think PJ and Co. may screw it up.

If it is done, mine may be the team stuck up in the trees with the wolves surrounding them. Gandy giving some pine coney fireball fun and unhappy dwarves wedged between the boughs.

    Nice.

Whilst there are scenes from the book (and the LotR Appendices ;-)) that I'm looking forward to seeing (and I'll post about later when I've more time), the first thing that springs to mind is...the New Zealand landscape in all its 5K-resolution, 48 frame-per-second, 3-Dimensional glory.

I know that's (probably) not what you were intending this thread to be about but it is genuinely one of the things that excites about this production. Yes, we've all experienced bad 3D and, yes, when it's bad it can really detract from the experience. But we've all experienced good 3D, too (think about how enthralling Avatar's luminescent forest was), and these two films will, I imagine, be the best yet.

The thing is, all the good 3D we've experienced so far (Avatar, Tron, Thor, Tintin) has been very heavily reliant on CGI environments. I want to see real mountains, real lakes, real forests, real sunsets in 3D. Jackson claimed in one of his Production Diaries it was like "cutting a hole in the front of the cinema and gazing into the real world". If it's anywhere _near_ that, I'll be happy.

some good suggestions guys and I am glad to see a positive thread, I am most looking forward to seeing Rivendell again, as I hope we will see more of it than last time, I love the lighting and the sunset/sunrise look of the sky, I am also looking forward to seeing Beorn and I really hope we will see his flower gardens, bees, animals. As to gandalf and the dwarves up the trees, its funny but I cant imagine Gandalf climbing a tree, he seems too venerable and powerful to do such a thing, so I will be interested to see how they handle it.

Me, too, Julia. When they announced production on The Hobbit I was thrilled but thought I had a pretty good idea of what was in store: trolls, goblins, spiders, wargs, a dragon and a cataclysmic battle. Oh, and some dwarves.

When they announced the inclusion of the WC/DG stuff, though, I was taken aback at first. But the more I think about it, and the more I debate it here, the more excited I am to see Saruman, Galadriel, Elrond, Gandalf etc ruminating together in the same room with at least the first two behaving very differently from how they do later in LotR (Saruman on the side of good, Galadriel as interventionist rather than isolationist). The postulated siege of DG I can live with (I'm a sucker for quality cinematic spectacle) but it's the actual debating beforehand I'm looking forward to more...

Come on Jason - like I said, what are you looking forward to seeing regardless of how you think it may get ruined.

An example of an answer could be:

"I look forward to a completely accurate recreation of the party attempting to cross the river with the one small boat, with exact dialogue, colours of trees, grass and smell of the air as describer by Tolkien".

You never know, there may be one scene in the whole film that is very close, if not exactly matching the original text... if that were the case (dont say it wont as you dont actually know it wont.... unless you can time travel in which case i withdrawn this comment) and you could pick that one scene to bring to life... what would it be?

I have a question, is the Arkenstone a Silmaril? and would the Necromancer want to get his mits on a magical jool like the Arkenstone? and could that be a reason he would be involved with the BO5A if indeed they do film it like that?

As far as I know Julia the Arkenstone is not a silmaril-and if it was Galdriel would proabably go after it!

And reply to your question Lance- the end credits? ;)

    Ayup Julia...

I always picture the Arkenstone as a Large Luminescent Crystal, Like a Shining lump of Quartz, and not a round Jewel, Like wot my mate Feanor Made... I've always found its description as the 'Heart of the Mountain' as an Enigmatic one. I wonder what PJ has in store for us ?

to return to the original question; I have to say I'm very much looking forward to see Beorn and the Carrock. I always loved the time the hobbits spend there because it seems like the "Last Homely House" (east of the Mountains) to me and the Hobbits are allowed to spend a few days of peace there before they're heading off into the darkness of Mirkwood.

Well, despite the fact we've still to lay eyes on Radagast, Bard, the Master of Laketown, Goblin King and Tauriel I'm with you, isobel! The _character_ I'm most looking forward to meeting is Beorn. Like you, I have such fond memories of that part of the tale and I'm very interested to see whether Jackson's vision for the character is anywhere _near_ the (fairly cliched, I admit) Hagrid / Brian Blessed hybrid I've had in my mind's eye all these years. I'm also interested to see how they tackle the whole shape-shifting thing...

What I'm most looking forward to is seeing Hobbiton again. Seeing this in FOTR really sold it to me, as they captured the look perfectly, with the interaction between tiny Elijah Wood & giant Ian McKellan so seemless I could tell I was gonna love it.

In the following years we've probably become a bit accustomed to such great special effects, but that initial feeling of "wow" will stay with me & I'm sure, like Kendalf says, seeing this again but in 3D will be another watershed moment.

Also seeing Bilbo all decked up in Dwarf armour will be entertaining. Watching the rise of the meek & reluctant Hobbit to a state of bravery & (at times) leadership will hopefully be very nicely done in the hands of Martin Freeman.

    Ayup Pablo...

Because of it tying into the Trilogy, we're bound to have the Giving of the Mithril coat to Bilbo. But as in the book, or the Appendices, I think we'll get a Comedic Bilbo in Ill-fitting armour A la Gimli in TT. From the last Production Blog, and because they're nw Permanent structures, I think Hobbiton will be wonderful and Idyllic. And like PJ, I could Easily see myself wanting to Hide there for the rest of my Natural...

The Arkenstone is most certainly not a Silmaril. There were only three. One was lost to the depths of the sea; one was swallowed by Arda itself; the last Earendil keeps as he sails the sky.

Actually, Stuart, you've reminded me of another thing I'm looking forward to seeing: the links with LotR.

As well as the obvious ones, like seeing Bag End and Rivendell again (although, like Julia, I'm looking forward to seeing _more_ of the latter), and seeing some of the same characters again (yes, including Galadriel and Saruman who aren't in the original tale), it's the _tiny_ touches that are going to make me smile just as much. Bilbo acquiring his sword and later naming it Sting; Bilbo being given his mithril shirt by Thorin (as related by Gandalf in FotR); the exact same trolls; and, dare I say it, a 10-year old Elessar running around (if it happens).

There are probably many other such links that I can't think of right now, but I'll enjoy them all...

I had pretty much typed up the same thing as Kendalf last night, but then my computer switched itself off (tsk)!

Seeing Hobbiton in all it's greenery will be brilliant. When FOTR came along, with the the perfect representataion of Bag End, along with the wonderful effects work on making Ian McKellan a giant amongst the Hobbits so seemlessl, instantly made me realise how well the films (in my opinion) were going to capture the books (better than I could imagine, & I can imagine quite a bit).

My other point is seeing Martin Freeman playing Bilbo. Watching the latest Sherlock on BBC1 last week made me realise even more how well he is going to fit the part & I think he's going to do a wonderful job. Happy days.

Yes I think Martin/Bilbo is going to be the highlight of the films. I also cant wait to see the Eagles, I bet they are a bit snooty and regal, I wonder if they think Bilbo is a funny looking rabbit?

I didnt just mean the composite parts but Radagast himself- he looks put together, beard added etc. I was just wondering if there had been an official pic of Radagst that had been used in that picture or if the Radagast was also a creation. The latter I suspect.
Like the staff though, hope the film one is similar.

It's an image of Radagast from the Lord of the Rings card game...

Nice work, though and I like the staff, too. Appropriate as he is, I suspect Jackson and Co. may want a slightly more distinct look, however, than "Gandalf the Brown". I wonder what it'll entail?

    And while I'm posting links...

Hey Stuart - no harm, no foul. I could live with Pablo - been called worse.

It seems I did post my comment last night then kind of wrote it again earlier today, but never mind eh?

Yes, seeing Radagast will be interesting & I can imagine him being made up as uber eccentric, judging by Sylvester McCoy's track record. Having 3 wizards working together (or Saruman giving the impression of co-operation) is something else to certainly anticipate. The back & forth debate of whether the wizards should use "flashy" magic or not I think will be addressed in the favour of a little flash-bang magic but only in dire situations (such as in TH when the dwarves are being kidnapped by the Goblins & Gandalf unleashes, in Tolkiens own words, a "terrific flash like lightning"). Elrond & Galadriel have a bit of magic up their considerable sleeves too, so seeing the White Council in any kind of action against the necromancer (whatever form he appears in) & his magic (after all, necromancer suggests a magician of the undead) could be massively impressive.

    Ayup Palo...

I would sure like to see a little Ralph Bakshi type 'Magic' in there, but PJ Said for the Trilogy that he was never a fan of that kind of thing... It woud be nice though... But Gandy, IMO, should be throwing a little lightning around, methinks. And I wanna see a Stone-Giant too ! Just as another Spanner in the works, how about Zombie Orcs from Sauron anyone ?

Stuart - Zombie Orcs - nice.

Guess they've already got a similar diet! If they had them set up as, stay with me, the Genosian zombies from The Clone Wars cartoon, that could possibly work!!! They weren't shuffling around trying to eat brains but were more the traditional animated corpse being controlled psychically (in their case by their queen). Orcs acting in this sort of vein is the sort of thing that could create a reputation of a necromancer hanging around & up to no good? Possibly with no Barrow wrights around in LOTR, these could appear too also under the control of the necromancer, but then there aren't any barrows in Mirkwood...
