  1. Ok, so for a while now I've been trying to think of who the voices for the three trolls should be. These are the trolls that Biblo and co. stumble upon in the troll shaws at the beginning of the story. Later, they all enter the trolls lair and Gandalf, Thorin, and Biblo find Glamdring, Orcrist, and Sting.

I have some ideas of who'd be good, but one actor rises above all of the others to me. Anyone remember Alan Ford who played Brick Top in Snatch (2000)? Listen to him deliver those lines as Brick Top and you can hear him quarreling with the other two trolls. To me it would be the perfect fit. I have not seen any casting for the trolls yet. I can't imagine that that suggests that the scene won't be in the movie, or that the trolls won't have any dialog.

Other voices I think would be fitting are Robbie Coltrane, Vinnie Jones, Andy Serkis, and it might be interesting to hear Jeff Bridges do a voice.

  2. vinnie jones would hysterical, put him with the guy who played the drill sergent from full metal jacket and that would be some serious comic relief

Andy Serkis will most likely do it, he did the voices of loads of Orcs in LOTR.

  5. They may not have actually inserted their dialogue/audio yet, dunno....

  6. andy serkis or other members of the cast remember john ryes davies did treebeard and there were others who played multiple orcs

  7. they are different than the cave trolls or the olog hai in mordor
in appearance they look like big fat people and they are more intelligent

The statues they become are in the extended of Fellowship. The look remarkably like cave trolls. It will be interesting if PJ follows the book and has Gandalf the trickster handle the trolls precisely as it unfolds in the book.

try and find out how the norwegians trolls are (the fairytale ones), that is how I have always imagine the trolls.
in the hobbit they have pockets.. well google'em and you'll see :) they match perfectly I think.

I think that Tolkien's trolls follow Norwegian trolls quite well. I think that PJ's trolls have already shown differently. It will be interesting to see if PJ sticks with his interpretation of the trolls which I do not see as humorous or capable of speach as Tolkien's trolls. Who knows. Bilbo certainly told the story in Fellowship much like Tolkien did. So it is possible that there was simply no need for troll dialog yet.

  11. found this and thought it was interesting and might help with the talking not talking issue with them

Morgoth, the evil Vala, created the first Trolls before the First Age. They were strong and vicious, but stupid creatures. Their major weakness was that they turned to stone in sunlight. Nobody knows how he managed to breed them, though it is stated by Treebeard of the Ents that Trolls were "made in mockery of" them, as Orcs were of Elves, though not necessarily from Entish stock. However, they are likely a corrupted form of some other race of Middle-earth, as both Morgoth and Sauron could only corrupt creatures which already existed, not create any anew. There is reference that sunlight will return them to the stone from which they were made

also there were 6 different types of trolls in Tolkiens middle earth Stone Trolls, Hill Trolls, Cave Trolls, Mountain Trolls, Snow Trolls, and the Olog-hai (trolls created by sauron who could travel in sunlight not unlike the Uruk-hai)

Vinnie Jones doing his cockney wide boy thing would be good, or Michael Caine doing 'you're a big man, but you're out of shape, and I do this for a living' voice from the Harry Palmer movies. also Stephen Fry or Hugh Laurie would be good.

    My votes:

    Bert: Robin Williams
    Tom: Tim Curry
    William: Jim Carrey

They're all capable of the kind of shenannigans you could expect from the somewhat smarter trolls in The Hobbit. The troll Trio are far smarter than the trolls portrayed in LOTR...

  14. I personally dont think they will chose anyone famous or huge in hollywood to play them. I think they will find someone unknown or use small time NZ actors or actors already cast in other roles to portray them

I believe Richard Armitage said in an interview that the trolls were the same PJ trolls from LotR. I don't know how credible that is and whether the trolls he saw were just placeholders or not I don't know.

  17. though the trolls are cleverer than the ones seen in lord of the rings; they're still pretty thick; it would have to be people with slower deeper voices. Definitely not Jim Carrey.

maybe they could use the actor who plays Hagrid he's got a good deep voice, or Bill Bailie the comic. I think they should look like they are in a Grimm's fairy tale, are Pukel men trolls?

  19. ha! Bill Bailey would actually be quite a funny troll! I think it would be quite cute if they let John Rhys Davies do one of the voices, a sneaky way of being in the hobbit!

maybe Omid djalili could be William the kebab eating Troll, Bill Bailie could be Bert the pie and eels eating troll, and Johnny Vegas could be Tom the fish and chips eating troll.

  21. joohn rys davies would be great cause the he wouldnt have to endure the gimli make up again that he had such a reaction to last time and from what i read he wants to return to middle earth to the point of "begging" PJ to get him there again

I think they will look just like the statues from the extended of Fellowship. I do not know if they will talk. I like the troll seen from the books but I am not sure those statues come to life will be capable of the bumbling of the trolls from the book. But at the same time in Fellowship Bilbo told the story just as it happened in the book so we will have to see.

  24. since so many people want Viggo Mortenson back maybe he could be one of the trolls voices Yeah thats it... Viggo, Billy Boyd, and Dominic Monahan there's 3 more LOTR cast back... LOL just a thought, not a serious one but a thought... Seriously though it will be interesting to see what they do from the designs from the Hobbit since the trolls were already sort of established in FOTR

  25. the trolls HAVE to talk, there is no way to effective;y do that scene with mute trolls. I do find it a bit hard to believe that the trolls would just "forget" about the dawn, that would be like a human "forgetting
they can't walk off a cliff, even if they were arguing with another.
They might play up Gandalf's role, implying he deceived them as to the real time as well...who knows?

  26. Ayup All...

I think it's a pity that the guys who played the trolls in the BBC Radio adaptation are prob'ly dead and can't do it again. I'm just listening to them, on my BBC Cassettes, and they're perfect. perfect 'East-End' Trolls... Just like wot my head thinks they should talk like. Give one voice to Barry Humphries...
