Question #44: 7 seeing stones, the palantiri, were carried from the wreck of Numenor. In the Kingdoms in exile they were originally each kept in a different place: a tower, a city or some other fortification. Name each of the original seven places of their residing.

No, not at the Havens. But close by. The first six guesses are correct. Just need #7.

Ahh, on the Tower Hills then? I seem to remember something about one set to look back across the Sea - but I might be getting my myths confused!

That is correct! In the tower on Emyn Beraid it was set. Now for Question #44 b): which palantir was Isildur's and which was Anarion's?

Isildur's was the one held in Osgiliath was it not? No...that was Anorians's, Isildur's was in Minas Ithil (Morgul) right?

Isildur's was in Minas Ithil, correct.

    Anarion's?

So... no one wants to take a stab at Anarion's stone? You're almost there! Once you know that Isildur's stone was at Minas Ithil you've practically got the answer!

Wasn't Anarions stone in Annuminas? And wasn't the one in the Tower Hills the one that could see to Tol Erresea?

Further hint: Anarion is Isuldur's brother.

I believe it was kept at Minas Anor ( Minas Tirith)

Ahh... yes. Elendil was head honcho up north. The brothers had Minas Anor and Ithil between them!

That is correct! You've already guessed correctly the next part of my question (which one saw only the 'straight path' to Tol Eressea) so on to Question 44 c): what happened to the seeing stones of Osgiliath, Annuminas and Amon Sul?

the stones of Anuminas and Amon Sul where lost at sea the stone of Osgiliath fell into Anduin during the destruction of Osgiliath

Didn't the last king of Arthedain drown with the Stone of Anuminas trying to escape on the boat with the Elves? Can't remember the King's name now. I think the stone of Amon Sul did the same after it was removed to Fornost following Cardolans fall.

With truth on the Osgiliath one... wasnt actually sure about that but his explanation rings a bell.

The stone at Osgiliath was housed in a domed structure built on the bridge over Anduin , It was destroyed during the wars of the Kin Strife I think and the stone fell into the river . Jon can probaly elaborate more

Two, I think - one at the Tower Hills, and one at Minas Tirith where the less than strong-willed saw only Denethor's hands withering in flame.

The Orthanc stone remained with Aragorn at the end of LotR, so that makes a third in ME at that time. It is not specified for sure but the Ithil stone was presumably destroyed along with Barad-Dur.

The stone from the Tower Hills was taken to back to Aman with the ring-bearers. That left 2 in ME, the Orthanc stone and the Anor stone which was not really usable.

Well... techincally then there are 3 left after Sauron's fall, one of which was taken to Aman a few years later.

Didn't the other two become telephones between Gondor and the rebuilt kingdom of Arnor? I dont actually know this one but assuming one stayed in Minas Tirith and the other went to Amunminas as that is where the capital was, not Fornost.

Did the Tower Hill stone go to Tol Eressea or Valinor? Could the other two still look to it (and presumably the Osgiliath stone still eves drop if the other 2 were in use)?

yooper you are correct ,The Minas Tirith Stone would only show Denethors withering hands unless the user had the will to change it.Lance the stone from Osgiliath was lost forever in Anduin.

Wow. My last reply on this thread was only a week ago and it's already been kicked off the page by the spammers.

The answer to #44 c) is correct.

For my next question I'll start w/something fairly easy - just a simple true or false - but be warned: I won't be able to back of my answer w/a citation - it will be based on something I read long ago (probably in a library) and I won't be able to quote the source.

    So....

Question # 46: Did J.R.R. Tolkien invent the word "Hobbit"?

Sorry - haven't been posting on here for a while as the arguements in many threads have got a bit old now.

For number 46, I am sure I remember reading that he thought he had invented it but didn't want to commit as he wasn't sure if he had read it before and that is why it happened to 'pop' in to his head.

I think there is earlier evidence of the word in descriptions of other made up beings (hobgoblins etc) however I don't think in the specific context of the species JRRT used it for.
