That cash grabbing scoundrel! How dare he take out dialogue from the books that serves no purpose to the plot in any way! And not to mention the exclusion of Tom Bombadil, the most interesting, relevant, and important character! Derp.
Stop whining because just because some dialogue/characters/material that would confuse non-fans were taken out of the LOTR/Hobbit films. When adapting a book to a movie there are scenes that can be cut because they don't work well on screen. Books are not movies.

And movies are not books.
So please make your own version of LOTR and Hobbit. We will see this in theaters. Money is most important thing when you make movie like this. Thanks to the money we can see so brilliant movies. So shut your mouth up, gently. Dont go to the theaters, kep reading books.
Farewell.

Well now dont I just feel a fool. I hadn't noticed they were different.
I await with baited breath for you to point out next that there is a difference between a rhinoceros and a high rise building. Is it silly season? So soon?

Chances are if a Rhino and a one bedroom house fall on you I doubt you would care for the difference.

I think in my final moments I would notice Barnamir- even it was just to think "F*** me! A rhino. In Scotland. Now thats unlucky!"

Wow I feel both enlightened and chastised...
Tell us please what we should like and expect out of a film. So we won't upset your sensibilities with our bothersome opinions.I suppose you are right , JRR doesn't have any idea of what is relevant or important to say about HIS characters. I should just accept and be happy that I am not confused further with his needless details and depth of story telling skills. I should feel tickled that I have the opportunity to view such a masterly interpretation and re writing of an obviously flawed and less "Spectacular" story. I now feel confident that the myriad of Diminishing Revisions are in fact Necessary to enable us to understand the story...I see now what you mean and I grock.

secularity, there is alot of dialogue from the actual book that would have worked very well, without change. Much better IMO than the made up drivel that Jackson either made up completely, changed around to use it out of context, or simply rehashed from LOTR to put into this film. Obviously the films aren't the books but that is because Jackson has chosen to rewrite most of the material himself instead of using what Tolkien wrote which works much better. But without the made up nonsense that PJ inserted Jackson obviously felt the source material wasn't good enough as Tolkien wrote it to be filmable. I disagree completely. I think Jackson's additions and changes such as the whole Azog story line was a bunch of crap, the Hobbit isn't as much about Thorin (which is what Jackson has done with it) as much as it is about Bilbo and HIS adventure.
Where Peter Jackson stuck to what Tolkien wrote the film was very good. Its just all the other added crap that drags the film down. Azog, Radagast, the whole mental telepathy white council nonsense, the elves watching Erobor burn, being hunted by orcs before even getting to Rivendell... all a bunch of crap. Entertaining to non book fans but just another element slapping Tolkien fans in the face and piss off those who actually love the story of the Hobbit. Not What the Hobbit could have been if Tolkien had rewrote it.
As far as material being cut from the Hobbit because as you say doesn't work well on screen. Maybe they should have hired a director who DID have a firm grasp and belief in the source material who could have made it work on screen. Instead of one who had a vision of the Hobbit, that was not the Hobbit. The Hobbit could have been told in one film, I would accept 2 films with the white council addition and maybe using some of the actual back story (instead of PJ's made up crap that totally violates what Tolkien wrote)Tolkien created. I find what Tolkien wrote about the beginning of the dwarf and goblin war to be far far more interesting than the BS Jackson gave us.

Great to have you back Sinister, Julia nad I were just wondering about you- hope all is going well with you.
I agree with your assesment unsuprisingly. Where its close to Tolkien its good, soon as it strays it becomes a cgi filled mess.
But those who argue PJ's changes are necessary ect here's a question for you.
The book TH hs one of the most famous openings in childrens literature and it goes like this-'In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole and that means comfort.'
Its famous, beautifully constructed and memorable.
PJ changed it to this-'In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, this was a hobbit-hole and that means good food, a warm hearth and all the comforts of home.
Now the question I have is why? What reason is there pertinent to aapting th emovie for such a change?
It seems to fulfill my accusation that they just dont like Tolkien and rewrite his lines even when there is no purpose- and in this case even when its an iconic well loved opening like this.
I just dont understand it.Posted 4 months ago # -
they changed it because we is stoopid, and wouldn't understand the way Tolkien wrote it I guessed. LOL
They changed it because of no other reason than they can. plain and simple. Jackson has to feel like he is in total control of HIS film and makes these nonsensical changes just appease his ego. Thinking himself quite the script writer. Or maybe it was Boyens fault who only ever had a minor class in script writing before her friend Peter Jackson brought her inexperienced ass into help write LOTR... Maybe that's it she should have taken a few more writing courses.

Just for the record. There are those of us who read and loved the books but also liked the films. It is not as simple as loveing the book means you hate Peej's direction. I loved the book and I love the films.
Posted 4 months ago # -
If Peter Jackson had done it right and stuck to the actual story of the Hobbit instead of feeling the need to change almost everything about it to meet his personal vision of it. I probably wouldn't have a problem with it. BUT Jackson should have stuck to Tolkien's vision of his tale in Jackson's own style. THEN I definitely would not have had a problem with it. There are ways to keep the book the way it is and still make a film of it...Like I have said time and time again when Peter Jackson stuck to the Blueprint Tolkien gave him his films were bordering on perfect, its when he deviated that they fell short, very short in some cases.

"There are ways to keep the book the way it is and still make a film of it"(Sinister 71)
Sorry for popping in the conversation so randomly but , I have to agree with "Sinister 71" in that part i quoted and in others i havent quoted..
Just watched The Hobbit 5 hours ago and i must say i would give it a 7/10 with a kind heart. I think PJ made bull***t out of a story that is straight forward and friendly to every fecker in this world. Even one that has or has not read the book. I love The Hobbit more than i do the Lord of the Rings. But some how he and the rest managed to spoile it.
I think it was nice what he did with the "quick" intro into Thorins past because the story in all fearness starts slow and wouldnt keep the attention of viewers that dont have patience and dont know the story.
But why make the dwarfes get into trubble with orcs so early when there is no reason.? Why make Thorin act like a complete fool of him self with Azog before the eagle came? Why but why , have that stupid scene of the dwarfes fall 1000ft crack in the Goblin town? Why make Golumn nearly get in the way of Gandalf and the rest when they are escaping? (there are more things)
Am i rong and i dont remember well, am i way to picky?
You cant make a film from a book and change parts of it because you dont like it. If you dont like it dont make it. I dont understand what people are saying that some parts of the book that cant be put in a film or something like that. Is it hard to make the dwarfes wear different colour capes and make them tell there names and leave at that like it happend in the book? Half the dwarfes are mentioned 5-10 in the book and only the important ones have a small part in the story.
I hope i havent gone to far with this, thanks :D and happy new year

I just dont understand it... TyrantWhy indeed? Nikitas no you haven't said too much, I think you will find a lot of us here in agreement. No you aren't too picky.
You loved the story like us and are disappointed and perhaps a bit mad that the people in charge of it apparently don't...
I agree Petty. The more I think about it that is the answer that makes the most sense. What else could be the reason? When over and over they make diminishing random seaming changes.... ?:(Posted 4 months ago # -
I get the need for changes in adaptation, for some things needing abbreviated, narration that needs to be conveyed and turned to dialogue, even moving dialogue to other characters or a different scene can have a purpose and reason- but this sort of thing which they do often, just changing a line without altering its meaning or employing it in some other use, I dont get it.
I can see no reason at all for rewritting that famous opening in this manner save ego or a dislike for Tolkiens writing style (in which case why adapt his work?).Posted 4 months ago # -

Ayup CB...
I think this sites reputation goes before it, and you get the occasional Troll who is just trying to (sadly) score points. It's a good job we've got a Knowledgeable group of People here to help repel Boarders. If it can be done by folks here with grace and wit, it'll be so-much easier for me as a Mod to not have to get Heavy...
I've always found that Trolls in the main can't handle being treated politely, because if one goes Head to Head with them, all it does is prolongs their enjoyment and encourages them to come back and have another Pop.
I have to say Well done everyone in here for showing a sense of Humour. If we can all remember to keep one, I think we'll have an even Better Site. Especially if the Trolls learn that we won't Bite !Unless they get too much. And then I WILL !

I don't think the OP is a troll at all. I think he makes a perfectly legitimate point that I do find myself somewhat in agreement with. He didn't make the point particularly eloquently, but that does not make him a troll.
Posted 4 months ago # -
That implies you understand the OP. I couldn't tell if they were pro or con the movie.
Posted 4 months ago # -
The OP is mad that we think the Hobbit was a bad adaptation and collectively have mixed feelings about the previous trilogy.
Instead of addressing criticisms we've raised, the OP has simply reduced our discontent to a simple straw man argument " When adapting a book to a movie there are scenes that can be cut because they don't work well on screen. Books are not movies."Posted 4 months ago # -
Ahhhhhhhh so they think sacasm works in text.

I’m sure that the OP is just upset about people are not bowing down before his hero and have their own opinions about his work. Let me put his mind at ease.
I have a friend that works for Peter Jackson, so I will not be naming names. One day over beers he told me about a wee drama that was unfolding at one of the workshops. One of the workers that had been working there for almost four years was taking some time off for a holiday, not a stat. He wished to receive holiday pay, like workers do when they go on holiday. He was told that he was not eligible; he got a bit fucked off and complained. He was told in no uncertain terms to shut his mouth or there would be no job to return to, there wasn’t a position for him when he returned.
Now this all come about because they are employed as contractors to get around giving them benefits due to full-time workers. The law in New Zealand used to say after a certain amount of time a contractor working for the same employer was due the benefits of a full time employee.
Something like five months pass and we have peter jackson in the news whining about how certain groups where attempting to have the hobbit film taken away from him. We then had a group of people saying this was not true at all they only wished for the workers employed under the peter jackson banner to be treated fairly according to New Zealand law. Lots of shit flinging latter peter jackson said that certain New Zealand and Australian unions had put out a statements ordering its workers not to work for him, thus making it impossible for him to make the films here and they were going to be taken away from New Zealand because of this. Both unions firmly denied these accusations and wished to talk to peter jackson to assure him this was not true. peter Jackson said that things need to be sorted yes talking needed to be done.A lot of political cock sucking went on, it was disgusting to witness. A law was passed by our government; over night I might add, to accommodate the making of the hobbit in New Zealand. That is they changed the law to take away the rights of the working person, which had been there to protect them from being ripped off.
After all the howling and screaming had died down from such bullshit underhanded tactics a few things came to light. First of all it was discovered that the lies about the unions attempting to get workers to not work on the film where just that PR lies, form within the peter jackson camp no less. Secondly a facilitator in the mess told how peter Jackson said to the persons on the other side of the dispute to fuck off he did not want to talk and he would get his way.
So in my personal opinion, yes there is a lot of money hungry bullshit going on.
