This forum used to be a frequent visit, but the predominance of whining and whinging about every decision you assume PJ has made, and the constant barrage of hate posts have turned me off.
Here's my last post, feel free to vent your heart out, I won;t be reading it.

1. It doesn't matter how the hell you think the film SHOULD be made, it will be whatever PJ decides it will be.
2. Given that, and given your previous well documented dislike of the LOTR films, and given that in all likelihood PJ will make significant changes to the Hobbit...you won't like the Hobbit Movie
3. Given THAT, it would be best if you simply don't see the film.
4. Since you aren't going to see the film, because you won't like it, you don't have to post in this forum anymore, as it is a forum about the new Hobbit movie, and nothing else.
5. But as you will anyway, because you all seem to enjoy making posts that do nothing but criticise every aspect of the film's production, well, good luck, enjoy your ranting posts, expect to be disappointed.

Good bye

Yeah its been a few years but yt the whole "bridge" film ideas keep popping up. I have no idea why since PJ squashed those when he took over. but its cook personally I like that the films don't butt right up to each other. i really have had no desire to see Aragorn again other than rewatching the trilogy. Things like Gollum leaving the misty mountains and Aragorn following him and his capture and escape and the ringwraiths all that stuff was great to read in Tolkiens writings but I can't see Jackson and crew coming up with a way to make those events between the Hobbit.and LOTR work in a way that would do them justice. It would end up being as interesting as all the stuff they.made up to insert in LOTR... Who knows maybe after the Hobbit they'll make another film about the in between time. there are enough PJ loyalists over at TORN to make it a number one movie

Guillermo del Toro gave an interview back in 2008 (when he was still signed on to be the director) saying that the bridge idea was rejected and PJ had indicated the same thing in subsequent comments. I'm not sure why that idea has proven so resilient among fans. :P AFAIK, the only "bridge" between TH and LOTR will be material like the White Council that is incorporated into the narrative of the two films that comprise a single whole.

Everyone has always mentioned a flashback scene as being the likley intro to the second film... most have thought it woudl be a Smaug killing everyone. Maybe it is more of a brief history of Erebor from Dwarves running from the grey mountains, discovery of the arkenstone and then smaugs visit. Sure that could be all covered in a few minutes. Might also serve as a good introduction to Dain as they could slot him in to the history too.

Landon,

I don't think that Thror was a prosperous dwarf any more when he went to Moria. Also, if I'm going into a dark mine, I'm lighting my torch or mining helmet BEFORE I get into the dark. I like the idea of wearing the mining helmet because I have 2 hands free with which to fight. I don't know what it would be like to fight with candles mounted on your helmet, but I'm lighting that baby up before I walk in rather than fumbling with it in the dark.

It could very well depict the discovery of the Arkenstone as well, I'm just saying what my first reaction was.

Rangers will survive even if we are reduced to Sunday League and jumpers for goal posts.
Thats the thing business will forget about football at its peril- all these agents, inflated egos and wages, ridiculous tranfer fees that are killing the game outside of the big leagues- none of it matters- it could all go tomorrow- so long as 22 guys have a love of the game a ball and four jumpers spare and want to play thats all you need.

Now there's something to unite & tear apart former polar opposites on this forum!

Petty - I may need your servies to translate the wonderful Paul Lambert as he's got one of the strongest Glaswegian accents I've ever heard. Man's a genius though!

Beleg - how do? Like your thoughts on "the actual driving out of the Necromancer would look like nothing more than a seance". Would be a bit anti-climatic everyone sat around a ouija board, eh?

Still, almost only 7 months to go & we all get to see what the fuss is about? Are even the most worried still planning on going, or will only a major turnaround in reports send some of the less enthusiastic members along?

Beleg>> That was my first thought too, Beleg, but others have brought up good questions about that theory: 1) If it's Thror, why is he not dressed more richly, being Durin's heir and all? 2) Thror only made it a few steps into Moria, but the dwarf in the PV is wearing a miner's helmet with candles mounted on horns. It doesn't seem like someone who's just barely stepped in out of the sun would have candles on his head . . .

Howard Shore seems like the one field in which I know this film will be good: the music. This film has a lot of ground to cover and obstacles (of it's own creation) to overcome to win me over with the visuals.
And at this point, it seems as though the story is going to need to perform some magic to convince me not to hate it.

I agree with you Petty I think PJ expected the film critics to come out of the test screening smiling and ready to run away and write rave reviews, but instead they came out disappointed and feeling cheated. Its the subject matter involved, a war film for example or something like the Bourne Identity series would have been better in 48fps and 3D, nobody would have had a problem and I am sure it would have had an exciting buzz. But fantasy by its very nature is not 'reality' and harsh gritty effects look strange and it pulls you out of the dream like atmosphere, not a good thing at all. I think at this stage its a waste of time worrying about the script or the characterizations, they are not going to be Tolkien, we all know its going to be Tolkien in name only, so my main concerns are a beautiful looking Middle Earth.
What does give me some hope however is the trailer, that was in 28fps and it looked good. If I can see the film in 28fps i will be happier. Afterall how many cinemas are going to invest with all these negative reviews?

Actually I think its pretty much as straightforward as just removing every other frame.

The worry, for me anyway is not confined to TH, but to future film going in this direction as well.

But my main focus of discontent is all to do with the script not the aesthetics.

As far as I am aware the film will be released in 48 and 24 speeds so it can be shown in cinemas without the 48 (most of them). -pettytyrant

If this is the case are we not getting worked up over nothing?

If you don't want to see it in 48 fps you don't have to...or if reports are that the final film looks poor (you can see the wigs, etc.) in 48 fps, you just go see it at one of the more common cinemas that shows only 24 fps.

I don't understand how they can produce 2 different films though. Surely they are not using dual cameras for every angle, and editing two sets of film...so it must be some kind of digital conversion from 48 fps to 24.

I partly agree Nikitas about the rules in the modern game- but then I watched football in the 70's and frankly it was often borderline thuggery. That couldn't go on.

Beleg there seems to be a lot of folks thinking the 'unfinshed footage' line is just that- a line- yes effects still had to be added, no doubt colouring grading too, but the whole point of this presentation was to sell the 48frames thing to the people who would have to pay for the upgrades to their cinemas.
Do you really think at such an important commercial excercise they sent roughs? I don't, I reckon they sent what they thought was the best stuff. The place it was shown was state of the art. The result therefore is worrying depsite all the 'its unfinished' backpedalling going on since.

As far as I am aware the film will be released in 48 and 24 speeds so it can be shown in cinemas without the 48 (most of them).

Julia, I understand your concern, but these critics were not looking at the finished product.

Here's a question though. If a theater doesn't invest in the equipment required to show the 48 fps, what will the film look like in their theater? Will that solve the "problem?"

When I first heard about the 48 fps (before anyone saw it) I thought it was a great idea and I was thinking that I've got to make sure that I go see it somewhere that has the equipment so I can get the full benefit. Now I'm thinking that possibly the reverse may be true. Still though, do you really think he is going to spend untold millions on a film that looks like crap aesthetically? Where you can tell the characters are in wigs? I don't see it. Surely he has more pride than that. Surely he tested the 48 fps on something before he made the plunge to use it. Surely there is a plan to "clean it up" before it becomes a final product.

I work with video (consumer video, not pro) a little for personal use and I've worked with video that is 15 fps and 30 fps. The 30 fps is far better (smoother). For this reason I assumed that 48 fps would be better than 24. Surely PJ did more than assume.

I agree about LOTR it was a beautiful looking film, and with the music of Howard Shore combined it was very very seductive, it kind of made me forget the glaring plot and character changes, like poor old Faramir. But from what these film critics say, that this new 48 fps the film has lost its 'magic' that it looks 'cheap' and like a made for tv BBC production, that the sets look fake and they could tell people were wearing wigs, for f-ing crying out loud! Its a FANTASY film, I dont want reality I dont want it to look like a behind the scenes Quint video blog, I want at least the beauty and magic of LOTR, thats all I want at this stage of the game, I have lost hope in actually seeing the Hobbit in any form like the book, it aint gonna happen.

The image we saw could depict the discovery of the Arkenstone, that is a good guess. However, my gut reaction when I saw it was that it was Thror peaking inside Moria as he entered alone never to be seen alive again.
