I know what you mean Odo. Reading the Sil, is like reading a lost Ancient Religious and Historical text (which I'm nuts for actually). Great Stories (truly awesome), but it's often hard to really identify with the characters.

I think this is a really hard question, there are so many characters, how can you choose?
But, as I was reading the Silmarillion, I think my favourite was Turgon; the idea of Gondolin really captured my imagination. Then he went and became obsessed with his city and caused its ruin by not heeding Ulmo's warning, so now I'm not sure... :?
I've always thought Felagund was awesome, he seemed the kindest of the lords of the Noldor to me.

PS
I almost forgot Tar-Palantir, I think he's pretty awesome (hence the name).

Strangely, I liked Thingol, Beren, and Luthien. :D

Hands down, it would be Turin Turambar, the "master of doom by doom mastered". His story, in addition to being the most complete, was the most moving. He was a hero who strove to overcome the Darkness, yet who could not defeat the darkness in himself first. However, he was the only one of the heroes of Men besides Earandil who slew a dragon, and Turin did it first. Plus, Turin set the example that it was better to struggle against evil and fail gloriously, rather than flee to submit to defeat and despair just because the odds were set too high. Too proud by half, but doubly brave as well.

Fingolfin's my man (or elf). Considering how noble elves are supposed to be there are not so many of 'em in the First Age.

Odo

NB When I said, "Fingolfin's my Man," I meant it in the sense of "after a fashion", not in the way that it could easily be misconstrued as. Likewise, if I had said, "Fingolfin's my elf," I would have meant largely the same thing (including the inter-species thing) and not in a 'misconstrued' fashion, as could easily be done, if you know what I mean - though only if you know what I mean...

Sometimes the purely imaginative takes over from the purely logical! Sometimes I should think before I write! Perhaps I've learned something here. Thanks Eldo!

Odo

NB Perhaps I should come up with a more cunning plan next time?

Fingolfin has always been a favorite of mine. Going one on one with Morgoth at the gates of Thangorodrim is awesome enough. The fact that he actually scarred and wounded Morgoth is even better.
