Hi Tar Palantir. Welcome to the forum  . Lot of serious Tolkien fans here, so you've come to the right place :ugeek: .

Hey Tar-Palantir (nice name ;) ), welcome to the forum! What are you studying at University, if you don't mind saying?

Anyway, if you want Tolkien this is a good place to be, I've had some really fun discussions here and hope to have more.

Thanks for the welcome, I've been a Tolkien fan (or is the word addict...) for years now, and haven't been able to discuss it with anyone else who's as obsessed as I am since I was about 12 (I had read LOTR I think 3 but perhaps 4 times by then). I only read the Silmarillion about 4 years ago though, and I've read it twice more since then. I recently bought The Complete History of Middle Earth, which is sitting on my bookshelf :) :D :) :D
I'm studying sciences (Physics mostly) at uni, though if I'd found anywhere that did a course on Middle Earth I wouldn't have thought twice... ;)

'Addict' has such a negative connotation ... I prefer 'passionate'. :P It sounds like you've found a good place though. For me internet forums (both here and elsewhere) are the only way I've ever been able to have serious Tolkien discussions with people. It's a lot of fun. BTW, are you referring to the 12-volume History of Middle-earth series? I have all the volumes except VI, VII, and VIII, but I'd like to get those some time.

The sciences are always fun, though I didn't get far in Physics myself because I'm not great at the math (the rest of it for conceptual physics was great even for me though 8-) ). I get what you mean about a Middle-earth class, I'd love to have one that's a combination of English, History, Sociology, Political Science, etc., etc. :ugeek:

Hi all

Poor Knight here from Australia.

I was pretty active years ago in the LOTR forum before FOTR came out...and I felt it was time to start following the latest news and discussions on the Hobbit as well. ;)

Look forward to some interesting discussions with everyone in the leadup to the movies!

Welcome to the forum PK  . Definitely a lot of speculation here at the moment, but soon we hope to be discussing actual film-making decisions.

Also, Welcome Silver Dragon(s). Good luck on your goals of joining the film production. I hope you stick around and join the discussions too.

Is there really such a dearth of entries since October, or am I somehow just not seeing them? I've read all the entries on this thread up through Oct 29, 2009, which is the last I see.

Like some others, I've sent a submission to another thread before I saw the New Members one--but it's all interesting. I'm Jim, in sunny and warm southern Arizona. I read The Hobbit and LOTR right on its heels, back in 1965--I have one of the first printings of them both, by Ballantine. I had heard about them while I was at the University, but had to wait for the paperbacks. Since then I've gathered several other published versions; in fact I wore out one full set. I thought the Hobbit was clearly overtaken by LOTR, maybe because I was more interested in the adult tale there; however, I fully expect that the movie of TH will project more of the adult story than the children's book.

I've read the Silmarillion, Children of Hurin, several of the history books, but I keep going back to both TH and LOTR, which I've read nine times over the years. My daughter says I've hooked her on it too--she's read it nearly that many times. The unabridged CDs have been great while driving, though I've found a number of minor differences from the books. And I prefer reading the books anyway.

And let's not have any more of this Old Fogey talk--around these parts we're known as Old Farts!

Welcome to the new Old Fart on the block  . Greetings Huskidawg  .

A lot of people start their own Newbie threads here in the New Members subforum. It's ended up becoming a de facto "chat" forum for off-topic discussions which you will find on a number of the "Hi There" threads  . So you will find newer postings on those other threads. But most of the action is in The Hobbit sub-forum right now, though posting has been a little light over The Holidays.

Happy Posting 8-)
