lord of the rings books

Postby wren_tigarian on Sun Jul 19, 2009 1:20 pm

hey guys, can anyone tell me where to find "tales from the perilous realm"
it is a prelide to LOTR.
The book is the perfect opportunity for fans of Middle-earth to enjoy some of Tolkien’s often overlooked yet most creative storytelling. With dragons and sand sorcerers, sea monsters and hobbits, knights and dwarves, this collection contains all the classic elements for Tolkien buffs of all ages.

i have unfinished tales and the silmarillion with the hobbit and three parts of LOTR. only this book is missing from my collection.
if anyone finds it, let me know.
and try reading belgariad, its awesome.

Hello there Wren! Well, I have yet to read this book, but it indeed looks very interesting. Perhaps I should pick it up in time. Either way, if you can't spot it at your local Library / Barnes & Noble, here is a link to Amazon where you can easily just buy the book online.

http://www.amazon.com/Tales-Perilous-Realm-J-R-R-Tolkien/dp/0261103431

Enjoy!

EDIT: Hooray for my 20th Post  !

I had never heard of this particular book, but I've heard of all the stories inside, and have read 1 of them. They are fairly popular children's stories, and are great if you want to get a taste of a different Tolkien genre.

tales from the perilous realm is a selection of Tolkien's shorter works, some of them bare some relationship to Middle-earth, but you won't get a new TH and LOTR experience. Only in Bombadil will you get a snippet about Hobbits -not enough to justify buying this book if that's all you're looking for.

I particularly like Roverandom. Very funny. Very imaginative. Tolkien was an amazing writer - and very varied.

Perilous Realm contains: ROVERANDOM, FARMER GILES OF HAM, SMITH OF WOOTON MAJOR, LEAF BY NIGGLE, THE ADVENTURES OF TOM BOMBADIL (a collection of verse), and an essay on fairy-stories. (I think that's all of them?)

A mixed bag but all good reads - but not for everyone, I'm afraid.
