Graphic Novels and Comic Books (we're all nerds- ri?)

Postby hObBiTzWiLlEaTyOu on Sun Jun 14, 2009 6:12 am

As an artist, Im really into comics, graphic novels and images pleasing to the eye and mind. Reading Lotr, other Tolkien work, and just fantasy in general create such fantastic visions in my mind, and I strive to be one of thos who can recreate such images on paper, canvasses and computer screens. So here- spill it all!!! Let us know iif youve found any cool new comics or artists. What do you like about comics that cant be conveyed in other mediums such as novels or film? I just thought this should be a fun section.

To start out: I really like the Sandman series by Neil Gaimen, as well as Watchmen (before the movie :p). At the library, I also get random fantasy comics by Greenman Publishing and the Flight series. For manga, Im pretty mainstream with Deathnote and Bleach.

OH YAH! Who's going to Comic Con this year????

I don't read any comics whatsoever...sorry!

I wish I could go to Comic-Con this year, especially since I think the people from Born of Hope are going to be there. But unfortuanetly I can't make it

Hah! I meant to start a thread for this months ago but never got around to it  .

I loved the Hobbit graphic novel version, but I don't remember who did it offhand. Tintin books are probably my favourite graphic novels. But I enjoy works by Moebius, Milo Manara, Richard Corben, and others frequently found in Heavy Metal Magazine (Metal Hurlant).

And I used to collect Spiderman comics.

I enjoy graphic novels as well. I just don't really get to them often.

But I can add this, I don't (as a general rule) like graphic novel/comic book retelling of novels. Gunslinger Born was the biggest disappointment thus far for me. I was expecting and hoping for new material about a character and world I fell in love with. Instead I got a stilted, cut down version of Book 4 of the novel series (Dark Tower series by Stephen King).

A graphic novel (just like a movie) can not recreate a novel, only make a pale image of it.

On the other hand, I would read (enthusiastically) graphic novels set in worlds establish by novels. Such as a graphic novel that tells the story of Dain at the Lonely Mountain rebuking Souron and his ensuing battles. Or a story of Aragorn during his time with the Rohirm riding beside Théoden’s father. Or his time serving Gondor in war against the Cosairs.

I would like to see a graphic novel take on the Witchkings rise to power and overthrough of Arnor. How awesome would that be?
I think that many confuse 'applicability' with 'allegory'; but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author.

The only graphic novel I've ever read (apart from a few mangas I borrowed from my brother and quickly returned) was Watchmen. I thought it was good, but not enough to warrant a re-reading any time soon. The idea of Tolkien graphic novels intrigues me though - is The Hobbit one anything like the book? And what is artistic style like?

It's a really beautifully painted book Eldorion. And the story is a relatively faithful adaptation, with some passages copied straight from the original. On Ady's second to last blog post, there's a copy of the cover. I think it's an ad for the book itself. Artistically, it is a series of watercolour panels that look like detailed mini-paintings. Very colourful, semi-realistic and not too cartoony.

Ooh, I just looked at the graphic novel and I'm very impressed by it - even more so if that level of artistry is maintained throughout. Is it entirely in color?

I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for this; I'm curious now.
