Its just epic when Eowyn kills the Witchking. Its one of my favorite parts and just awesome, plain and simple.

"Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!"
A cold voice answered: "Come not between the Nazgul and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."

A sword rang as it was drawn. "Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may."

"Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!"

Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. "But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Eowyn I am, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him."
The Return of the King: "The Battle of the Pelennor Fields," p. 116

Amazing, amazing.

My favorite Tolkien quote comes from the Hobbit...Spoken by Smaug.

"I am SMAUG! I kill when I wish! I am strong, strong, STRONG! My armor is like tenfold shields! My teeth like swords! My claws, spears! The shock of my tail, a thunderbolt! My wings, a hurricane! And my breath...DEATH!"
"Praise not the day until evening has come,
A sword until it is tried,
A maiden until she is married,
Ice until it has been crossed,
Beer until it has been drunk!" - (Viking proverb)

^whenever I think of that, I think of the animated Hobbit movie. lol

My favorite LOTR quote is (from the movies, at least) "Arise, Arise, Rider's of Theoden. Spears will be shaken, shields will be splintered. A sword day, a red day ere the sun rises. Ride now! Ride now! Ride for ruin and the world's ending! Death! Death! Death! Forth Eorlingas!" Gives me chills every time I watch that scene.

I like this one, Gandalf recounting his imprisonment by Saruman at the council of Elrond-
Saruman-"Or until it is found in your despite, and the Ruler has time to turn to lighter matters:to devise ,say, a fitting reward for the hindrance and insolence of Gandalf the grey".
Gandalf- "That may not prove one of the lighter matters".
But then also adds- "He laughed at me, for my words were empty, and he knew it.
Brilliant, because Gandalf knows although he his powerful, he does not yet have the power to defeat Saruman, let alone Sauron.

"Fly, you fools."

Simple, straight to the point, gets the job done. Thats the one that comes to mind anyway, though there are, I'm sure, quite a few others.

I'll put my favorite quotes at the best of my memory.

"Baruk khazad! Khazad ai-menu!" - a dwarven war cry. Gimli at Helm's Deep

"The way is shut, it was made by those who are dead. And the dead keep it. Until the time comes, the way is shut"

I can't really choose a single one, there are so many good quotes. Just on the spur of the moment though, there are a few that come to mind. My favorite sentiment that I think is just rather beautiful is:

Theoden in TTT, The Road to Isengard wrote:'Yet also I should be sad. For however the fortune of war shall go, may it not so end that much that was fair and wonderful shall pass for ever out of Middle-earth?'

My favorite descriptive passage that literally takes my breath away is:

TTT, The Riders of Rohan wrote:At the bottom they came with a strange suddenness on the grass of Rohan. It swelled like a green sea up to the very foot of the Emyn Muil. The falling stream vanished into a deep growth of cresses and water-plants, and they could hear it tinkling away in green tunnels, down long gentle slopes towards the fens of Entwash Vale far away.

I like Rohan, can you tell? But there is also the obvious passage that is just amazing:

Sam, in ROTK, The Grey Havens wrote:'Well, I'm back'

A wonderful end to a wonderful book. :)

If there is a single quote that is tied for ever with Lord of the Rings, I think it must be the one that stelladog points out:
stelladog wrote:"Fly, you fools."
The other quotes are heroic, passionate or in other ways noteworthy too, but if you walk into a random crowd and say "Fly, you fools", everyone imagines Gandalf hanging on the bridge in Moria (whether by movie or by book).

"Knock on the doors with your head, Peregrin Took, but if that does not shatter them, and I am allowed a little peace from foolish questions, I will seek for the opening words!" - Gandalf's words to Pippin in front of the gates of Moria. ( A Journey in the Dark - Fellowship of the Ring)

OR....

"'And after all sir,' added Sam, 'you did ought to take the Elves' advice. Gildor said you should take them as was willing, and you can't deny it.

'I don't deny it,' said Frodo, looking at Sam, who was now grinning. 'I don't deny it, but I'll never believe you are sleeping again, whether you snore or not. I shall kick you hard to make sure.'" (A Conspiracy Unmasked - Fellowship of the Ring)

We the willing, led by the knowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, for so long, with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing
