Now you've got me wondering what Melian would look like!

Nicole could cetainly pull off any acting role (and come over to my place whenever she wanted to for that matter, not even my own wife could blame me for that, surely! I'm only human... Where was I...? Oh yes....)

Would Melian be dark of hair, I wonder?

More than likely. or extremely light of hair. I don't think tho that she and Tinuviel should look the same, yet they should share that uncommon beauty...

You know, if only uncommon beauty was just that little bit more common, our task would be made easier!

Well there are a LOT of stunning young starlets, it's not "how beautiful are they", it's "how beautiful can they act" ;) . As we have discussed earlier, it's the Inner Beauty that makes the Outer Beauty "uncommon".

It's like Tyler's and Portman's ability to convey vulnerability and strength and passion and compassion all at once that sucks us in and makes their Outer Beauty Radiate from the Screen.

In any case, I can't believe I've only just thought of this, but I think Emma Watson (Hermione) is just such a young actress. If I were young Beren, I would be utterly distracted from Orc Slaying if I came across her in the Wilderness ;)  .

Hermione, you say! Then me and Beren both! (Her relationship with Ron is the best thing about the Harry movies as far as I'm concerned. But that's another story altogether!) Hey! Emma already has magic powers. We'll save time on training!

I'm not fully convinced with your argument about 'uncommon beauty' though. I've seen some absolutely beautiful women who did not appear to have any inner beauty at all. In fact, there have been some women of uncommon beauty who have been proven to be, in fact, extremely common! But that's another story altogether!

I think when you refer to Inner Beauty and Outer Beauty coming together in the one package, you're actually referring to uncommonly uncommon beauty. Anyone could make that mistake! :ugeek:

I like the Gist of Uncommonly Uncommon Beauty Odo 8-) .

But the reason I feel as I do, is that many women that light the fires of billions of men the world over do almost nothing for me, including such popular "Hotties" as Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie, both fine actresses in their own right, and both seem quite good natured off-screen too. But there is something a bit "Sharp" and "Unattainable" about them (of course they all are for me   ).

But others like Tyler, Portman, and Watson (and a few others whose names I forget at the moment) have a down-to-earth quality about them. They seem "Real" and "Sweet" and "Cuddly" to me. Of course this is all entirely subjective. But my sense of it is that there is something about their Inner Natures that appeals to me above all else  . (And it may be that you are absolutely correct to call this "Uncommonly Uncommon Beauty", in which case my standards are far too high, and I am doomed to wander the Earth forever with my Love unrequited  :ugeek: )

You could always jump from hottie to hottie like a cat on a hot-babe roof. Eventually you might find an uncommonly uncommon hottie of uncommonly uncommon beauty. And even if you don't... well, jumping from hottie to hottie for awhile surely wouldn't be all that bad, would it? At least you wouldn't be wandering the earth absolutely aimlessly!

If we can't find that uncommonly uncommon beauty (for movie purposes, not 'requiting" pursposes), we might still be able to find one who looks outwardly beautiful and can "act" inwardly beautiful. We're talking about someone who can actually 'act" aren't we?

Indeed we are Odo, indeed we are.

However, there was an intriguing episode of Star Trek Classic (Kirk et al) called Mirror Mirror wherein our erstwhile Heroes are trapped in a Vicious Parallel Universe. They were easily able to be pretend to be as violent as their counterparts long enough to figure out how to get back.

Meanwhile, their Brutish Doppelgangers were busy making asses of themselves in "our" verse. The moral of the story was that it was easier for those with inner beauty to act ugly than it was for those with inner ugliness to act beautiful. My personal experiences have led me to believe this is largely true.

I like the Emma Watson idea. She does have that elvish look doesnt she? and I agree with you GB and your star trek philosophy  But i especially like the idea of Watson being Luthien; she's young, pure hearted, and beautiful (so is Lutien to an extent...) But most importantly she should look very young! I think that the younger she is the more immortal she'll look.

Isn't it amazing how we keep slipping from the sublime to the ridiculous, with me, I'm sad to admit, possessing the biggest slice of the ridiculous! You're both right, of course! If the Star Trek writers don't hold the answers, who does?

It seems we are back to square one. We need to find someone who is beautiful both inside and out, can act with genius, and seem quite old (in some ways) while looking (and seeming) young at the same time.

Emma seems nice.... and Natalie too. Both seem to be real possibles for Luthien. They're my favorites at the moment. Who else?
