Anyone ever tried to pen a fantasy story?

Postby Felagund on Thu Jul 30, 2009 10:36 am

Well, anyone of you guys tried it! ;)

I have, I love novel-writing but as yet I've never completed one of them, its like Tolkien's Unfinished Tales, but one day I hope to get one published!

I always attempt to do such things, but then I realize I am taking tid-bits from other fantasy stories that I admire so much /facepalm
Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.

Same here...only a few pages, then....POFF! Its kind of annoying, I guess, but when I read my stories a year later, and discover theyre crap, it doesnt matter anymore... Ah well, Im not planning to be an author, but its still nice to let all my imaginations out in short, unfinished, 3-paged stories ;)

I started one fantasy story, and it went for many chapters (7 or so), about 20 pages. But that ended, since I grew out of it.
I started writing another (non-fantasy) story, and it went for 11 chapters (36 pages) before I grew out of it. Now, although I'd like to finish this one, it would require a complete overhaul of the entire story. The whole thing is just too immature for anyone's eyes to read.

Sometimes I try writing short stories, but then I start with all these details and complicated story plots! :?

Ahh...if only someone could invent a machine that reads your thoughts and write em down ;)

Zackira, you read my mind ;) . I start many stories that I never finish too. And I've wished for years I had a mind-writing device  . I always start with drawing maps and inventing languages. Perhaps I should try working on characters  . The longest "fantasy" stories I managed to write are...erm...the OTHER sort of fantasies, the kind you don't want your mother to find   .

same with me GB. not so much languages, but I have countless maps I've drawn based around stories that never get written! :?

I've been sorting through old boxes in the garage and found tons of my old maps Astar. Often along with pages of notes on the cultures, languages and place names. I really ought to attempt to follow through on some of my ideas someday when I've got my life a bit more in order.

I always feel like a Tolkien Rip-off hack though, when I try to write fantasy. But heck, if Paolini and others can make money doing it, I surely can't be much worse (but maybe I can   ).
