John Noble did a grea job with his character. Denethor was so hideous and so rude with Faramir I felt like I wanted to choke him and give him a piece of my mind. Still, good job John!

Just remember though that "the ring had brought to Gollum (not Smeagol) unnatural long life." This is to say that Gollum as we know him 76+ years later in LOTR would NOT be much different looking. He would still be that "gangly creature" mentioned in the Hobbit, which - again- is to say that 76yrs is no comparison to the rest of his 587year life span due to the power of the ring. Remember that the ring was lost for 2 and a half thousand years, and came to Gollum who had it for approx. another 510yrs before losing it to Bilbo! So reletively speaking, to ask for Gollum to be made to look younger would be like asking a 90 yr old man to be made to look like he's 88(or so). There MAY be a slight change, but I can hardly believe that there would be much especially at 587 yrs old!

Well we wait with bated breath! Philippa, you claim you are a big Tolkien fan and have read his books many times. Well, now is the time to redeem yourself and the whole “middle earth” project. It is time to use your influence to "encourage" - "Jackson" and Fran to keep the script writing of the film(s) true to the writing in the book. I’m sure there might even be enough “material” in the Hobbit book to satisfy any “creative licence” urge that people (or a person) might be feeling. Maybe even another homage to Ray Harryhausen - with "shock horror" maybe some (full featured) Trolls, big spiders or maybe even a dragon - just for a change. I 'm sure this "encouragement" can then quite easily be passed on to the director without too much trouble as he has already stated himself that "I am anxious to shoot the book".
Now wouldn’t that make for an exciting film(s). Again a plea from all Tolkien fans worldwide keep the film(s) true to the book.

I think that this is an oportunity to make a darker Gollum. Del Toro said than he want to be faithful to the books, not only to the LOTR films. In the books he`s almost black

I think Bilbo is around 50, possibly 60 in the book so that would mean that it's about 50-60 years between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. But yeah, I agree, would be cool if gollum looked slightly "younger" :-)

Yes, I am glad they have him back. Can't imagine another actor playing his part. The three things The creators of the movie did perfectly was the scenery, the music, and the Cast! I really hope Toro doesn't screw up. All LOTR is counting on him to make a bridge, to their world!

I think they should update, or de update gollums look. I mean it has been a hundred years or so in between the Hobbit and the trilogy. He should have A more hunched back and such.

i agree with "nmd1" i hope Del Toro doesn't make the movie too dark. its a quite happy and lighthearted book in many cases and i hope Del Toro can capture that. On that note "Spiders and Flies" will be simply amazing in the eyes of Del Toro. im excited to see what he does with that chapter as well as all the other chapters dealing with Mirkwood.

any thoughts?

p.s. i agree, those cartoons where painful to watch haha

A lot of people have been making some good suggestions, but I don't think that James McAvoy is the best one. Personally I think that Sir Ian Holm is still the best candidate because he was featured as Bilbo, but also in the movie when they played a "flashback", he was featured on his journey to deal with Smaug. How is Del Torro going to make that transition with someone else? The only other possible candidate I can see right now could be Colin Firth(Google his pics to see what I mean). He would make a younger, but not TOO young Bilbo Baggins, which would "place" him properly in the Middle Earth timeline. ALL the others mentioned in the previous posts are too young, or too comic, or too wild to play the prestigious role of Bilbo.
