Ian McKellen has made quite the reputation for himself when he took on the role of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. No other actor, save perhaps Christopher Lee who plays the role of Saruman, another (albeit evil or at least antagonistic) wizard in the film, can do a convincing Ainu of Middle Earth, having both an air of both great wisdom and unstoppable power. Then again, Ian McKellen has always been noted for getting good roles in a lot of films. This just goes to show the quality of his acting which has topped all expectation.
As the filming for The Hobbit film trilogy begins to end with Desolation of Smaug due in December and There and Back Again which will be making its appearance in late next year, it seems unfortunate that Ian McKellen’s involvement in the project also seems to be at an end. Sadly, this turns out to be true as the filming for The Hobbit is indeed ending and that Ian McKellen must now leave to do other projects. Of course, this is not at all surprising considering his popularity and acting skills.
Just for starters, one of his most successful roles had been that of Magneto from the X-Men film franchise. For those not in the know, Magneto was the leader of the rebellious mutants of the film franchise who was a victim of the Holocaust during the Second World War. Due to the brutality of that episode in his life, he had become a deeply cynical and embittered character, hating all of humankind and seeking to usurp with the help of other mutants who had joined his misguided cause. Definitely not a mutant to be underestimated, Magneto had the power to control all things metal and use them as weapons.
Still it is sad to note that Ian McKellen’s work with The Hobbit has drawn to a close as is shown in his latest photo with the film’s director Peter Jackson. Oh well, Ian McKellen is not really that old anyway and we can only expect more from the talented actor.
Latest updates on the British actor’s activities include his appearance in another installment of the X-Men franchise entitled X-Men: Days of Future Past. Little has been revealed regarding the film although it has been confirmed that we’ll likely get to see it somewhere in 2014. This is certainly a splendid development for Ian McKellen as he seems to be moving from one blockbuster film to another. Well, we can only hope for more great films for this actor in the years to come.
