Nonetheless, Peter Jackson is best known for breathing life into Middle Earth, the world that J.R.R. Tolkien created. It began with Lord of the Rings which proved to be a massive success and later on prompted Jackson to also adapt Lord of the Rings’ prequel novel, The Hobbit into film as well. Also divided into a three-part film trilogy, the first installment alone, entitled An Unexpected Journey has proven to be a global success and actually managed to trump the release of Lord of the Rings first two installments, Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers.
An Unexpected Journey managed to gross as much as $1,017,003,568 in the box office alone. That doesn’t even include the film’s success in terms of the home video department. Apparently, An Unexpected Journey, along with a lot of other blockbuster films like Dark Knight Rises, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Wreck-it Ralph, managed to keep home video companies like Time-Warner and Metro Goldwyn Mayer afloat despite the troubles brought on by the economic recession.
And lately, video rental company Redbox has made a rather irresistible offer: a chance for viewers to watch the movie for free by sending potential viewers an email citing them to tweet a given page a number of times and can then view the full movie for free. Redbox Instant and its subsidiaries Verizon and Coinstar have launched a new website to further promote the release of the free videos addressed as GiveMeAMovieNight.com. For some reason however, only a few viewers have earned the opportunity to view the films for free although the chance to earn this is open to everyone as long as a number of requirements are met. These requirements include an account through Redbox Instant and renting the movie itself within a given amount of time. While there have indeed been precious few audiences given the opportunity fans still seem eager to earn the right to see An Unexpected Journey for free with their friends and family.
Surprisingly, this is just the reaction to An Unexpected Journey. One can only speculate over the kind of response, the second installment (entitled Desolation of Smaug) will illicit from both viewers and video sale/rent companies after its release in December of this year.
