Originally planned for release on July 18, 2014, New Line Cinema and MGM have moved the theatrical release of The Hobbit: There and Back Again to December 17, 2014.
The third in The Hobbit trilogy, there has been some speculation on fan sites among forums that the release date should fall into line with the others, since the December date for Hobbit movies has now become somewhat of a tradition. Whatever the reason for MGM and New Line’s decision the new date separates it from from Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past in July, which is good as we will get two doses of Sir Ian McKellen in a major release that year. December 17 though does have The Hobbit: There and Back Again arriving just two days before Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainments’ Despicable Me spinoff, Minions, and Brad Bird’s mysterious Tomorrowland; not I think that this will deter Hobbit fans in favour of these offerings.
Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution at Warner Bros. stated in the official announcement:
“We are excited to complete the Trilogy the same way we started it, as a holiday treat for moviegoers everywhere.”
Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution also added,
“Our holiday release of the first film set a successful precedent for this wonderful Trilogy, and we’re delighted to bring it to a conclusion in the same release window.”
