It was a slightly disappointing night for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and Australians as it happens, at the Oscars last night. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, was up for three Academy Awards for best makeup and hairstyling, best visual effects and best production design. It had already picked up a Technical Plaque in the run up to the main event.
Why Australia? Well because two Australians we were most interested in, make-up-hairstylist Rick Findlater and visual effects nominee Dave Clayton both missed out on Oscars. Both were nominated for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Findlater’s main job on The Hobbit was to transform Sir Ian McKellen into Gandalf the wizard. He had been nominated along with senior Hobbit make-up/hairstyling team members, the UK’s Peter Swords King and America’s Tami Lane. Clayton, 34, from Brisbane was a senior animation supervisor on The Hobbit.
All we can say is, hard luck – this will not diminish the high regard in which the films are held on this site nor the tremendous effort exerted by these artists.
