Have you ever wondered how magical a moonrise over Middle Earth must be? Guess you have. We don’t often simply reproduce art on this site, even though we could fill page after page with brilliant stuff, but this is exceptional.
Have a look at the short video below, which is a stunning real-time recording of the moon rising over Mt. Victoria in New Zealand. Mt Victoria, as you no doubt recall was used most memorably in the ‘Escape from the Nazgûl’ scene, where Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry had a close encounter with the Dark Lord’s ringwraiths.
Weta Digital artist Mark Gee recorded the shot after many attempts. He told Stuffco.nz:
”I could never get it in the right spot. The moon moves every single month, so I had to find a location open enough and far enough away from Mt Vic to get the correct angle of the moon and Mt Vic. Weather was another issue.”
Check out the foreground – I’m pretty sure they’re Hobbits.
For the technology geeks out there, the video was taken using a Canon DSLR 1D Mark IV camera with a 500mm lens with a 2x extender.
