Midnight Hobbit three times higher than Avatar

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is confounding its critics. By midnight Friday, it had already grossed three times more than Avatar at $38 million. In fact, the film has already pulled in $94 million world wide, which is pretty impressive.

Mark Hughes, at Forbes has observed:

“After some last-minute jitters due to dubious complaints from a large segment of top critics and some unrestrained hyperbolic backlash from certain segments of the online fan-site community, The Hobbit proved it will overcome the obstacles and that the more extreme criticisms are a minority view without the weight to slow down the film’s theatrical run.  “

The film’s Screenwriter, Philippa Boyens is even more positive than this, saying:

“Tolkien would be pleased with the big-screen version of The Hobbit.”

Talking of critical reviews, the general view is that the film has been panned by all critics from the first screening, but this is not the case. For example, Carol Pinchefsky, also at Forbes gives a pretty balanced view that neatly sums up what a lot of fans and others are saying.

TheOneRing.net is offering us all a chance to submit our own reviews and a chance to win something into the bargain. Have a look, if you’ve not seen it already.

Another interesting little snippet beginning to surface is that Peter Jackson put himself into a cameo role in the movie. Did you spot him?
