If you think that Gollum’s movement on film is simply a re-run of the 2001 movie, then think again. In a recent interview the actor playing Gollum, Andy Serkis, told Wired.com:
“…motion-capture technology has come a long way since the first Lord of the Rings film in 2001, bridging some of the “disconnect” he felt while filming on separate live-action and motion-capture stages for the original trilogy.”
Serkis, demonstrating once more that Gollum is as much an acting challenge as a technical one gives an interesting insight into how he recreates the character for the film.
