Hobbit Extras Needed in New Zealand

by The Hobbit on December 30, 2009

If you live in or have a work permit for New Zealand and want to be a part of The Hobbit movies you will want to send in your photograph and details to Three Foot Seven Ltd.

Hobbit Extras Application
3 Foot 7 Limited
PO Box 15104
Miramar
Wellington 6243

Jack Machiela, a tour guide for former Lord Of the Rings film locations and an active blogger about Wellywood gossip managed to get the official address along with the following advice:

You MUST be able to work in New Zealand. This means you will be an official Kiwi or have valid permission to work in the country. New Zealand have strict laws regards working and insist companies must employ locals (quite right too) unless it is a job that can only be carried out by an overseas worker and being an extra in The Hobbit does not fall into that category.

Do not phone, email, call in person etc. Snail mail only.

You should send a head shot face on plus profile and full body shot face on and again with a profile shot.

If they like what they see they will send you a proper application form so make sure you include your address.

Don’t bother telling them whether you feel you will make a great Hobbit, Dwarf or Elf etc. Leave it up to them to decide, it’s their job – they know what they are doing.

Jack recommends that once you have your photographs and details in the post, you simply sit back and wait. If they don’t get back in touch you were either too ugly or not ugly enough.

Lucky New Zealanders…….

Still, keeping it to NZ only is a bit too confined. I mean, giving others a shot at glory is fair enough, no?

I don’t know where you are from, but let’s face it, the book was published in 1937, so you’ve had a few years to make this movie yourself.

It’s not being “kept” to NZ – the rest of the world wasn’t interested in making it until we showed them it was possible.

Frankly, the glory is ours, sir.

I was referring to the fact that auditions for extras is being held in NZ only. I was merely expressing a wish that expanding the extras casting call may give others that don’t live in New Zealand a chance without too much hassle to get residence in NZ.

No complaints if they don’t, though.

@Digit23, I know it must be disappointing not to be living near the film location, but there is hope yet. NZ law prevents the studio from hiring non-NZers for positions that can be performed by locals, and sadly, extras don’t require any special skills. Non-work permit holders can be granted work visas if they are chosen for main roles though, so the actors casting search will be worldwide.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that if you’re in NZ for the duration of the shoot on a temporary visa like the 1 or 2 year “working holiday” visa (available from more countries every year), then you can make it into the movie as well.

Essentially, if you want it enough, there are legal ways to do it.

Check out the NZ immigration site for more details (I’m not an expert). http://www.immigration.govt.nz

Hear Hear! I agree with you completely. Life isn’t fair. NZ did a fantastic job on LOTR, the same will be true of the Hobbit. You guys don’t need anyone else, jealous as they may be.

Actually, I think NZ was a great idea as it’s a beautiful place to shoot. I’ve never been there but I was amazed when I saw the locations they found.

Hey Jack M..the guy from The Nolder Blog right??

So pretty much you have to be an NZ citizen to be an extra (or have a working visa)

BUT

if you want a shot at a role that isn’t an extra, it’s open to anyone yeah?

I live in Australia and want to somehow be apart of this movie (i.e. acting). Is there anyway I can be cast if I live in Aus?

Mancsoulsister January 8, 2010 at 12:01 am

@Benjamin, I think as an Australian you are entitled to work in NZ, you would just have to be in NZ for the duration of the film if you were cast as an extra I think!

I would check out the NZ immigration site for more details

@Benjamin,
Hi, did you find out the answer to this? I’m Australian and keen to.

Do you think we could just send in pictures anyway and then apply for a temporary work visa if we’re chosen as an extra?

Libby January 7, 2010 at 6:56 am

I think its great they are making it nz only. lets face it. In nz you have a better chance of struck by lightening then making it big in the acting world. NZ is often forgotten when it comes to talent and as a struggling actress im thrilled they are giving us priority

Hey! I wouldn’t like to be an extra, but would love to have a possability to help out with some kind of camera work. The thing is that my dream is to become a movie operator in future and TLOR is my favourite movie!Do you think it’s all really strict in NZ and I still must to have a job permit and work visa? I’m a freshman college student from Russia and to get this type of visa at this moment is unpossiable for me. Do you think they might exept me with a travel visa too?

Thank you for any clues, guys!=)))

No matter what it takes, we’ll make it through!!!
