Peter Jackson On The Hobbit Movie Progress | Related News
Peter Jackson has told IGN that he didn’t want to direct The Hobbit because he didn’t want to compete against himself. He says he chose Guillermo Del Toro because he believes he will do a ‘terrific job’ and The Hobbit is not suitable for a novice filmmaker.
In the interview (which you can watch in the video below) the new look slim line Jackson goes on to explain why they decided to split The Hobbit into two parts and his plans for Gandalf and the Necromancer.
The confusing thing for me about this interview is that PJ says ‘everyone assumes we are casting which we are not’ and he goes on to say they are a ‘couple of months’ away from starting the process.
Yet at the beginning of June we have GDT giving a video interview (here) saying they have narrowed the part of Bilbo Baggins down to 3 actors and an announcement was due ‘within weeks.’
Is it any wonder we are confused?

I was Wondering when auditions are cause my Agent doesnt even know and i was hoping to Audition for the movie

His reason for not directing The Hobbit are so not making sense. PJ says he’s not making the movie because he doesn’t want to compete with himself? Is there a competition anywhere?

@Eva, I think he’s actually a bit miffed that he didn’t get director’s chair for The Hobbit, but then again no one really knows for sure.
I think he should of been given the role of director. I don’t want the new guy the ruin the image that Peter Jackson has created of Middle Earth and J.R.R. Tolkien’s series…

well.. It’s a really logic reason: If he thinks that was his life work, it’s the moust perfect thing he has ever made. How can he make something better than the best there is in his mind? if he fails, it will be a much grater falure. It’s easyer to guide two masterpeaces together than build just more stuff on a masterpeace. It’s better to have two cups with tea, than one cup and overfill it. If you understand what I mean

I still wish PJ was directing, but I see what he is getting at. I just hope it is as good as the LotR trilogy.

OMG they are going to destroy this great book, it was originally written as a CHILDRENS tale and is supposed to more light hearted and fanciful than the long winded lord of the rings trilogy. They shouldn’t try to over dramatize this movie the way they did with The Return of the King which was basically fight scenes with long dramatic slow motion shots with haunting music in the background stuck in between.

@Crazycoonass, if that was all the Return of the King was, it wouldn’t have won best picture. The only reason it gets a bad rep is because those who haven’t read the books expect credits to start rolling at the end of every victory of men.
With that said, I hope GDT gets his act together filming The Hobbit. I just saw Hellboy II and it was complete crap.

@Giovanni, Granted Hellboy 2 was crap but so was hellboy 1. I think Pan’s Labrynth is a much fairer representation of Del Toro’s work.

@Crazycoonass, I think you forget that there is already a childrens movie of the Hobbit! This film is for the Adult in the child that watched the cartoon version. I thought the LOTR movies were spectacular and deserved every acclaim they received and more. Go watch the cartoon version of the hobbit and stay out of the Theatre!

It’s easy to understand
PJ and GDT says the same thing, but in diffrent ways.
PJ says: they havn’t began official with the casting and so on
GDT said: we got 3 favorites
so they got 3 favorites, but they have to see witch one they wanst later when they are ready. Maybe they find somone else than the 3 favorites? They’ll disocver all that when they are beginning with the real casting. why make a problem out of something that’s not a peroblem?

I’ve been reading news on the casting of “The Hobbit,” and a few YOUNG actors names have been thrown “out there” as possible Bilbo Baggins.
I am so puzzled about something, and maybe someone can explain it to me.
In FOTR, it is explained that Bilbo found the ring in Gollum’s cave, and that he kept it for 60 years.
Gandalf explains to Frodo that for 60 years the ring remained in Bilbo’s possession while “delaying old age.”
When Gandalf and Bilbo greet with a hug at front the door, Gandalf tells Bilbo, “you haven’t aged a day.”
Since Bilbo finds the ring during his Smaug treasure hunt, his physical appearance should then be the same as when Gandalf visited him during FOTR.
So, “The Hobbit” Bilbo should look like the Bilbo of 60 years later (FOTR.)

@Eva, I agree with your point on this. I did see this being a problem the first I heard Ian Holm would not be reprising his role as Bilbo.
However, Holm is somewhere around 80 at this point and Bilbo was 50 years old in the Hobbit so he would no longer be suitable for the role. I don’t understand why people are talking about Radcliff and Mcavoy as they are far too young. I personally think Colin Firth would be a good choice as he bears some resemblence to Ian Holm.

It’s easy: It’s normal to for old people to say “you havn’t aged a day”, as a joke or just to give a nice coment.
just if a boy says to his girlfried: “You look more beatiful for every day” what in moust cases means:”I still think you are beautiful, but I just wanted to say something special nice to you cause I like you so much”

Eva and Bryan I agree that bilbo should look middle aged and colin firth has the appearence though personally I cannot his voice suitting bilbo baggins I think that Ioan Gruffudd would be better for the role

I feel it’s more important to cast the best Bilbo possible than to restrict the options only to those who resemble Ian Holm. I’m an avid fan of all the books and prefer the movies stay as close to the books as possible, but I could easily forego an age and a resemblance difference to get the best Bilbo we can.

Personally, The Hellboy movies were garbage and if that is the same director I turn my back on this Hobbit movie. I will go to the Theaters anyway to see it out of respect for Tolkein. PJ should direct it, but maybe he could play another role like assistant director just to give friendly advice while not having to worry about every little detail.

come on guys an gals - for those mulling over who’s gonna play who and how the new kid on the block is perform as Herr Director - let’s just give big ‘G’ a chance and trust that he’ll do a great job. Obviously PJ trusts him. Looking forward to 2011/12 with impatience!!

I personally think the role of Bilbo belongs to Ian Holm. I think he did a great job, and as much as other actors would do well, i think it would be loyal to offer him the role of Bilbo again.

really hope Del Toro does a good job. loved the LOR trilogy well done pete as everyone knows but you cant beat the books! so fingers crossed they dont change the hobbit too much and if they do pick the book up again nothings better than your own imagination! cant wait till 2011

I’m certain we all know the real reason Peter Jackson is not directing the Hobbit Movies: his run-in with New Line Cinema about royalties. Guillermo del Toro is a fine director, in his own right. And we all hope that these two installments don’t turn out like Hellboy I and II or Pan’s Labyrinth. Far too macabre. Make us proud Mr. del Toro!

Way back in the dark ages–when there was no LOTR films–what did people think of Peter Jackson directing? At the time he’d done some interesting films–but certainly nothing on the level of Lord of the Rings. I can remember when I first heard of the films. I was thinking–OMG its being made in NZ by a down under director and being released by New Line Cinema. Oh yeah–this is going to be great—NOT!
And look how wrong I was!
So at least based on Pan’s Labyrinth–I would think GDT has a handle on the fantasy element.
And PJ will at least be keeping an eye on the process.
For me–it will just be wonderful to get back to Middle Earth.

Well im excited by PJ saying that The Hobbit will include extra stuff from JRRT. I’m sure then that they will have the Dwarves versus Orcs war, and especially the battle before the gates of Moria where Azog is slain, and where Thorin gets the name Oakenshield when he loses his shield and deends himself with a tree branch.

The Hobbit movie is going to be fantastic, of course it is!
I hope that del Toro brings a new magic to middle earth and it is great that Peter Jackson will still be involved. The Hobbit is such a different book, it’s more of a fairy tale style of journey, for a younger audience. Hopefully Bilbo will be cast young too, because even if he’s 50 in the books, he’s still setting out on his first great adventure to see the world.
All of us who loved the lord of the rings are going to be queuing up at the cinema to see the hobbit anyway, but it would be great if the hobbit films were accessible to a younger audience too so that they were introduced to the world of middle earth and might go on to read and watch the lord of the rings later.
Weta are going to have a lot of fun with these movies too, can’t wait to see what they can come up with after all their other fantastic projects recently!!!
