You have to remember, almost a century has passed after the hobbit when LOTR picks up. A new director would add a different look for the newer middle earth. The hobbit is much lighter, no doomsday, no epic battles for the survival of mankind. Its key that Del Toro emmulates this differance. I think if jackson were to do it himself it just wouldn't work. Also I love to read LOTR over and over, but hadnt gone back to the Hobbit for some time. As I am reading it again right now, it does have such a different tone.
