New faces are necessary. The tale goes on, and has gone on, with each new character acting his or her part in the story. Continuity with setting and narrative is the key.

Narrative timeline says Bilbo will be 60+ years younger and Frodo and his generation not yet born. Read The Silmarrilion. Beren and Luthien is an action packed adventure for it's own sake, but has the added benefit as being a tie in to Aragorn much later. Their off spring was the precursor to the Numenorian kings. Finally, Sauron (before he became that ridiculous eye) is in the story. You could even throw in some spiders in Northern Belleriand.

Garanid

Read The Silmarrilion. Passion, adventure, magical hound and enchanted cloaks made of hair, daring rescues, bewitching Morgoth and cutting a Silmaril from his crown, and a tragic and beautiful love story? What the heck do you need for entertainment?
Astin was fine, but my least favorite hobbit; as much as I love Merry & Pippin, they have no place in these stories unless the connecting movie (part 2) gets right up to FOTR...

Lay of Luthien boring? I don't know why people get it into their heads he did, when he said it about 50 times he avoided the World Wars in the books. I thought Astin did it quite well. Tolkien would have been satisfied. If you don't, that'd your problem.
Lay of Luthien? That would make a boring as hell movie. Please, do get something with a storyline, not something that views like a documentary.

Ityr, Tolkien did not envision his heroes as WW1 warriors. The Frodo-Sam relationship as interpreted by Astin was not what I read in the books; it was at times icky, not the comrade-style friendship WWI surviver Tolkein envisioned, I'll wager!

I would be relieved to not see Astin in the movies. The actors who played the 4 hobbits might come back as different hobbits--not sure if that would be good or bad--as to the timeline--the movie LOTR already changed it, so LOTR book purists need to let go of the issue--a movie is NOT a book. Frodo was clearly not 50 in the movie--since he left right after the party.
The Lay of Luthien might make a grand movie on its own too. Bring on more Tolkien.

The more movies (of good quality) that are made the better.<br

I kinda assume every time we hear news of actors in LOTR movie being brought back into The Hobbit movie (when they are not in the book) means that they are probably referring to the 2nd movie. We'll see.

They’re making 2 movies right? The Hobbit, and H2/F2 (bridge between The Hobbit and LOTR). You will see that the hobbits from LOTR have no part in the Hobbit, aside from Bilbo. Furthermore bending the story too much to fit them in, will only ruin the story, In my opinion. Keep the integrity of the story, how Tolkien wrote it.

I agree with Craig. Educate yourselves on the book, and the real story. At the birthday party Frodo turns 33, but he doesn't leave the Shire until he's 50, the same age Bilbo was when he went on his adventure. Therefore Frodo's quest takes place nearly eighty years after Bilbo finds the Ring. So there's absolutely no reason for them to be in the film. They play no part in it.

The Hobbit takes place almost thirty years before Frodo was born, and he’s the oldest of the four hobbits.
