Narrative timeline says Bilbo will be 60+ years younger and Frodo and his generation not yet born. New faces are necessary. The tale goes on, and has gone on, with each new character acting his or her part in the story. Continuity with setting and narrative is the key.

Read The Silmarrilion. Beren and Luthien is an action packed adventure for it’s own sake, but has the added benefit as being a tie in to Aragorn much later. Their off spring was the precursor to the Numenorian kings. Finally, Sauron (before he became that ridiculous eye) is in the story. You could even throw in some spiders in Northern Belleriand.

realistically i dont think the second hobbit film will be called “the hobbit 2″ as there are many stories collected from tolkiens old notebooks, so in theory it ll be a name out of random something that would sound good…

Lay of Luthien boring? Passion, adventure, magical hound and enchanted cloaks made of hair, daring rescues, bewitching Morgoth and cutting a Silmaril from his crown, and a tragic and beautiful love story? What the heck do you need for entertainment?

Astin was fine, but my least favorite hobbit; as much as I love Merry & Pippin, they have no place in these stories unless the connecting movie (part 2) gets right up to FOTR…

Ityr, Tolkien did not envision his heroes as WW1 warriors. I don’t know why people get it into their heads he did, when he said it about 50 times he avoided the World Wars in the books. I thought Astin did it quite well. Tolkien would have been satisfied. If you don’t, that’d your problem.

Lay of Luthien? That would make a boring as hell movie. Please, do get something with a storyline, not something that views like a documentary.

I would be relieved to not see Astin in the movies. I felt his steady weight gain and softening during the Ring trilogy, when Sam should have been hardening and thinniing was very unfortunate.
The Frodo-Sam relationship as interpreted by Astin was not what I read in the books; it was at times icky, not the comrade-style friendship WWI surviver Tolkein envisioned, I’ll wager!

The more movies (of good quality) that are made the better.
The actors who played the 4 hobbits might come back as different hobbits–not sure if that would be good or bad–as to the timeline–the movie LOTR already changed it, so LOTR book purists need to let go of the issue–a movie is NOT a book. Frodo was clearly not 50 in the movie–since he left right after the party.
The Lay of Luthien might make a grand movie on its own too. Bring on more Tolkien.

It’s so ridiculous to create a second Hobbit movie to fill in the gap between the Hobbit and Fellowship. They should just make a movie based on the Lay of Luthien.
