Sean Astin Doubtful Of Hobbit Movie Recall

sean astin won't be back for the hobbit movie  | read this item

Sean Astin spoke to Sci Fi Wire today about a possible return to Middle Earth in one of the Hobbit movies. Unlike co-star Dominic Monaghan though, it seems Astin has actually read The Hobbit.

Regular readers will remember in January we reported Dominic Monaghan believed that Astin, Billy Boyd, Elijah Wood and himself - the original Hobbits- will play some role in the two Hobbit movies but Astin thinks it unlikely.

When Sci Fi Wire asked Astin to comment on the thoughts of Dominic Monaghan he told them:

I wouldn’t personally expect to be back. Peter knows that he just has to tell me when and where to show up and I’ll be there. But I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going on with that. Everyone would say during the releases of the Rings films, “Oh, will The Hobbit ever get made?” There was all this political stuff.

The studio had only certain rights and they wouldn’t do it unless they had all the rights and they weren’t ever going to make a deal with the other company that had the other rights, and blah, blah, blah.

I always just said, “You people are out of your minds. Of course it’s going to be made and it’ll be great and Peter will do it. And there it is.” And they’re doing it. So I’m excited. I’m excited to see them. But I personally don’t expect them to call me.

If members of The Fellowship don’t know what’s happening, we’ve no chance :-)

I just can’t picture how they would work them into the movie. I figure that would be why he expects to never get that call.

How would they be able to put them into the movie. The Hobbit was all about Bilbo and probably before they were born depending how old they were during the rings.

  5. mikem says:

All you need to make this happen in a Hobbit movie is an opening scene with Bilbio tellilng the young hobbits how he came into possession of the ring.

  6. Craig says:

The Hobbit takes place almost thirty years before Frodo was born, and he’s the oldest of the four hobbits. At the birthday party Frodo turns 33, but he doesn’t leave the Shire until he’s 50, the same age Bilbo was when he went on his adventure. Therefore Frodo’s quest takes place nearly eighty years after Bilbo finds the Ring. So there’s absolutely no reason for them to be in the film. They play no part in it.

I agree with Craig. Educate yourselves on the book, and the real story. You will see that the hobbits from LOTR have no part in the Hobbit, aside from Bilbo. Furthermore bending the story too much to fit them in, will only ruin the story, In my opinion. Keep the integrity of the story, how Tolkien wrote it.

To bring Sean Astin back would undermine the credibility of the film. Best to stay faithful to the book.

i really don’t understand what gave them the idea that the four hobbits would come back. their characters weren’t even alive during the hobbit. As much as i love them, I dont see how they could be in the 2 movies without ruining it.

btw you do realise that the hobbit is made into two films, and that the 2nd part is the bit between the hobbit and the lord of the rings. so it can fill up the gaps. surely you would already know this? or am i missing something…..

They’re making 2 movies right? The Hobbit, and H2/F2 (bridge between The Hobbit and LOTR). I kinda assume every time we hear news of actors in LOTR movie being brought back into The Hobbit movie (when they are not in the book) means that they are probably referring to the 2nd movie. We’ll see.

  12. Strider says:

It’s so ridiculous to create a second Hobbit movie to fill in the gap between the Hobbit and Fellowship. They should just make a movie based on the Lay of Luthien.

The more movies (of good quality) that are made the better.
The actors who played the 4 hobbits might come back as different hobbits–not sure if that would be good or bad–as to the timeline–the movie LOTR already changed it, so LOTR book purists need to let go of the issue–a movie is NOT a book. Frodo was clearly not 50 in the movie–since he left right after the party.
The Lay of Luthien might make a grand movie on its own too. Bring on more Tolkien.

I would be relieved to not see Astin in the movies. I felt his steady weight gain and softening during the Ring trilogy, when Sam should have been hardening and thinniing was very unfortunate.
The Frodo-Sam relationship as interpreted by Astin was not what I read in the books; it was at times icky, not the comrade-style friendship WWI surviver Tolkein envisioned, I’ll wager!

  15. Garanid says:

Ityr, Tolkien did not envision his heroes as WW1 warriors. I don’t know why people get it into their heads he did, when he said it about 50 times he avoided the World Wars in the books. I thought Astin did it quite well. Tolkien would have been satisfied. If you don’t, that’d your problem.

Lay of Luthien? That would make a boring as hell movie. Please, do get something with a storyline, not something that views like a documentary.

  16. Marlin says:

Lay of Luthien boring? Passion, adventure, magical hound and enchanted cloaks made of hair, daring rescues, bewitching Morgoth and cutting a Silmaril from his crown, and a tragic and beautiful love story? What the heck do you need for entertainment?

Astin was fine, but my least favorite hobbit; as much as I love Merry & Pippin, they have no place in these stories unless the connecting movie (part 2) gets right up to FOTR…

  17. timmy says:

realistically i dont think the second hobbit film will be called “the hobbit 2″ as there are many stories collected from tolkiens old notebooks, so in theory it ll be a name out of random something that would sound good…

  18. Roquen says:

Please, it’s Lay of LEITHIAN, “release from bondage”.

    Garanid

Read The Silmarrilion. Beren and Luthien is an action packed adventure for it’s own sake, but has the added benefit as being a tie in to Aragorn much later. Their off spring was the precursor to the Numenorian kings. Finally, Sauron (before he became that ridiculous eye) is in the story. You could even throw in some spiders in Northern Belleriand.

Mr. Bean???!!!! R U kidding me? Atkinson may be “brilliant” to some but he is simply annoying to me. I shall hope for the best none the less. Del Toro needs to put his ego aside & embrace the genius of Peter Jackson.

Narrative timeline says Bilbo will be 60+ years younger and Frodo and his generation not yet born. New faces are necessary. The tale goes on, and has gone on, with each new character acting his or her part in the story. Continuity with setting and narrative is the key.
