I would hope they would make it different enough for it to still feel like Middle Earth and not Narnia. I am VERY excited to see Beorn, though! Whoever they cast as beorn, he's gonna be a beast of a man, gruff but kind... I can't wait!

@Francisco, The only way I can think of them doing the scenes with Beorn effectively would be somewhat similar to what they did with the animals in the Narnia movies. Del Toro has said that the emotional focus of the films will be on the relationship between Thorin and Bilbo, and that the break will occur at a point of development in this relationship. It is when Bilbo rescues the dwarves from the Elven King's dungeons that Thorin finally accepts Bilbo as a good thief, recognising Gandalf's trust in the hobbit. This dialogue presents an emotionally satisfying end to the first part. The last shot of the film I expect will be Bilbo riding the barrel in the river out of the edge of the forest, revealing a landscape of the east, with the Mountain looming in the background, in a similar fashion to the shot at the end of The Two Towers. A break at this point is also a logical place for the films' running times, as content before and after this section is around the same amount in the book. The relationship between Thorin and Bilbo will be further developed, of course, in the second movie by the complication around the Arkenstone, Thorin's anger at Bilbo and finally their reconciliation at Thorin's death.
Breaking the film after Smaug's death is a ridiculous notion, as it leaves not enough content for the second movie, and far too much for the first. Smaug will be saved for the second part.

I am absolutely sure the break between the movies will occur with the “Barrels Out of Bond” scene. This became a problem when LOTR was penned so it was rewritten that Bilbo "found/stole" the ring. Further proof of this (if you don't believe me) is that the ring simply made Bilbo invisible in the Hobbit. It was never a burden until LOTR. Enjoying reading all this so I thought I'd put in my 2 cents. Peace.

Since you guys seem to be hardcore Tolkien fans I suspect many of you know this, but for some who may not…In the original book release of the Hobbit, Gollum gives the ring to Bilbo as a reward for answering the riddle. That doesn't leave much of the story left to tell in Part 2 does it? The battle of 5 armies immediately after the death of Smaug and then it's all over. I guess we'll see, but hope they can pull it off. With the computer graphics technology available today, watching these books that we've all enjoyed in the past come to the big screen is such a real joy.

2 Parts to the Hobbit movie, the first part ending with the slaying of Smaug? I think the distinction between Eragon and Spiderwick is that Spiderwick is an original take on fantasy themes whereas Eragon is a retread. Have you joined the forum yet? we will probably have to go over some of the material already covered in this thread for new arrivals. But there are already some good conversations happening. If you change your username let me know please.

Paul, You are right on about the Spiderwick Chronicles.
