John Noble is the second actor who had a major role in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy to publicly state that
he wouldn’t return to Middle Earth should Del Toro make the call.
His character Denethor doesn’t make an appearance in The Hobbit but Del Toro has hinted the second movie could feature the story of Aragorn and so Denethor the Steward of Gondor would feature prominently.
John told MTV Movies:
“If they said, ‘Would you come and play Denethor again,’ I would have to say, ‘No, I’m doing [new J.J. Abrams television series] ‘Fringe’! And I certainly couldn’t play a younger Denethor or even Echelion now that I’m an older John. Not even with makeup.”
“I do wish them the best of luck, however. There’s tremendous fan interest in ‘The Hobbit.’ But ‘Lord of the Rings’ was so special, you could tell even when you were working on it, that it was just so good, and sometimes, you just want to leave that in a special place somehow.”
That “special place” may well hold back yet more cast from making a return to Middle Earth and could end up being a major challenge for Del Toro although it’s going to be a major help having Peter Jackson in his corner.

John Noble did a grea job with his character. Denethor was so hideous and so rude with Faramir I felt like I wanted to choke him and give him a piece of my mind. Still, good job John!

John Noble was indeed really great as Denethor, but he’s being a bit of a tool here… Can’t he see this is much bigger than him? He shouldn’t be so selfish to deprive us audience members of continuance, and the suspension of disbelief. He is Denethor, and by God, if he is alive, then he has a duty to play him again, should Denethor be written into the movie…

Who is the other actor that turned down a role? anybody know?

All this is pending the question of when did Denethor succeed to the chair of Steward of the White Tower? When did Ecthelion die? And John Noble is quite right that a younger actor should play a younger role. Denethor when seen in ROTK has been greatly changed by his confrontations with Sauron, and wouldn’t be recognisable to his earlier self.

I don’t know for sure, but I’d assume the other actor that wouldn’t be reprising his role would be Ian Holm?

It was Christopher Lee who says the trip to New Zealand is now too much for him at his age but he would like the part of the voice of Smaug which he could do in London.

I hope Del Toro will stay true to the tale as told by Tolkien as it stands alone and does not need any backtelling or additional explanation. Bring new actors in—this a prequel, not a sequel!
