After my initial recoil, I let it simmer for a while, and became more and more excited by the idea. I now believe that Bowie would play the part incredibly well. He's very good at playing "imperious" and he never has seemed exactly human. I've become so obsessed with the idea, that the thought of anybody else playing Thranduil now disappoints me. Come on people... think about it.... anybody remember the Goblin King? Of course the role would be more serious, less quirky and without the singing... saw my baby cryin.... HARD AS BABE COULD CRY!!! WHAT COULD I DO??..... ahem.... sorry......... but why shouldn't it be a little campy? The wood elves of Mirkwood aren't supposed to be like other elves. They are unaccustomed to contact with humans, and are therefore not quite so friendly. They are standoffish, and enigmatic. I am worried about who they will choose to portray him. I just have this image of him in my mind - his looks, his voice, his attitude. I just haven't seen anybody that looks like he is good enough to play him... But than again, I know basically nothing about Doug Jones.
