Guillermo Del Toro has been speaking about what progress if any has been made since the original announcement that he was to be director.
He told Entertainment Weekly that all though no deal had been finalized, negotiations were on going. He also aid that discussions had already been held regards cast and crew and that agreements had been reache regards the Hobbit movies direction.
When asked about all the hold ups he said that the folding of New Line, while causing a few problems, wasn’t really the problem. “I think it played a role[New Line] for a few days; being dramatic, I would say a couple of weeks. But the fact is this is a huge endeavor. It’s about a half a decade of commitment. It’s two movies back to back that are massive. So a lot has to be sorted out. All I can say is, creatively we are all in sync and eager to commit and move forward.”
He also went on to say that he hoped to have things moving by the Summer and that he would be going public with the schedule once it was sorted. When asked about the script for The Hobbit movies he was happy to report that everything had been sorted and that the screenplay was to be handled by the original Lord Of The Rings script writers (Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens) although he would have some involvement.
Things are at last looking up for The hobbit.

I suppose he’s a good choice but I would have preferred PJ as director.
