Elijah Woods confirmed my theory first posted way back in July that the second Hobbit movie would be filling in the 60 year gap from the end of The Hobbit to the beginning of The Lord Of The Rings.
“I haven’t spoken to him directly (Peter Jackson) about it but I’ve e-mailed him, and as far as I know the two films that they’re doing, one will be The Hobbit and another will take place between the 60 years that happened between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings” the soon to be again Frodo told MTV Movies.
He also said it was important the original team were responsible for making the movies and that it was shot back in New Zealand.
Expect most of the original cast to state a case for the return of their character in the following weeks.

I can’t wait. LOTR was a good book but my favorite while growing up was always The Hobbit. I must have read it 10 times since.

I don’t see anyone making up a story to bridge the events between the Hobbit and the LOTR. For starters, that would be kind of a sacrelige in the Tolkien community, and more importantly, Nothing much happens during that period if you read the timeline. No, I think they will just break the story into 2 halves- where I don’t have a clue.
