He was second unit director on LOTR. That should make for consistency across the movies. My guess is that Peter isn't going to want someone in the job that he hasn't worked closely with and can trust personally. Also he needs someone with not too big an ego since again I'm guessing that Peter will still want some control over the the overall look and feel of the movies. Newline might see Murphy as risky, but the biggest risk is probably a fallout between Jackson and any new director, and Murphy is low risk from that pov. Geoff Murphy would be my choice.
