The Hobbit movie will be made and probably be released in 2009. What is uncertain is who will make it and who will be in it. The Lord Of The Ring forums are full of people arguing the need for Peter Jackson to make the film as he would be able to bring many of the original cast back together.
For The Hobbit movie I don’t see this as a legitimate argument. Bilbo is much younger in The Hobbit than he was in LOTR so will have to be re-cast. Gandalf of course plays a major role throughout the series and would need to be played by Ian McKellen as he did such a fantastic job as Gandalf.
It would be great if Peter Jackson were able to do the hobbit movie as it would be bring the same feel he applied to The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy but I don’t think it is essential. All fans will tell you The Hobbit is different to the LOTR trilogy, being written for a younger audience so might benefit from having someone new at the helm. Its also worth pointing out that its not too long a go that many were condemning Peter Jackson for straying from the original books.
Two that have committed to return from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy are Liv Tyler who played Arwen and Andy Serkis is to return as Gollum.
